In the middle of my first guitar rebuild and I've got a bit stuck with remounting the bridge humbucker... the mounting ring is tapered and I have no idea which way the taper is supposed to go. This is a new ring, but the one that came off the instrument (which I should probably mention is an old Ibanez SuperStrat type thing) tapered as well, of course I didn't notice this until after I'd taken it off and removed the humbucker from the ring!

Did you try placing the ring on without the pickup in it to see if it sits in one way but not another?
