I am hoping to go tomorrow for the opening day, but if I can't make that I plan on going to the exhibit Wednesday. Photography is allowed so I will try to take as many photos as I can. I am hoping to attend Saturday's events. The panel with his guitar tech would be fun to see and I really want to make a screen shirt for fun.

Nirvana: from Nowhere to Nevermind

Explore the road stories and behind-the-scenes tales during Nirvana's world tours from 1989-1994, as seen through the eyes of the people that kept it rolling. Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses curator Jacob McMurray moderates this panel with the band's sound engineer Craig Montgomery, drum tech Barrett Jones and Kurt's guitar tech Earnie Bailey.

2:30 PM (DOORS AT 2:00 PM) // PANEL // JBL THEATER

The Metropolis: Birthplace of Grunge?

Seattle in the 1980s wasn't exceedingly friendly towards punk rock and youth - in 1984, an all ages venue called the Metropolis opened in downtown Seattle, and became a regular destination for teens that were interested in alternative music and culture. The Metropolis was the creative epicenter for many of the musicians and scenesters that would go on to be major players in the Grunge era. Senior Curator Jacob McMurray will lead a panel discussion on the Metropolis and the salad days of Seattle punk rock with former club owner Hugo "Poki" Piottin, Jason Finn (Love Battery, The Presidents of the USA), famed grunge photographer Charles Peterson, Alice in Chains manager Susan Silver, Tom Price (Gas Huffer, U-Men) and Kurt Bloch (Fastbacks, Young Fresh Fellows, Thee Sgt Mjr III), Gordon Doucett (Metropolis partner, Red Masque), Tony Medeiros (Metropolis Doorman) and Chad Blake (aka Slam Hate.).

Panelists are subject to change.

I had a blast at the exhibit today. Here is a link to all the pics I took, but here are some of my favorites:

This shirt I got to make at the members only part this morning with a screen printer. The autographed pickguard I have had for about ten years. I met Earnie Bailey at a panel today and he signed the bridge cover so now it is a better set. :) (Him and I below.)

One of Kurt's In Utero Mustangs. Earnie told me they cut off the switches because Kurt kept hitting his hand on them. Unless it was changed, both pickups where in use. (I have read people saying he only used the bridge pickup.)

This is that Mustang clone that was originally brown and had the vinyl record pickguard... well what is left of it. LOL

The infamous Vandalism Stratocaster.

They moved the blue "Smells Like Teen Spirit" Mustang from it's normal place to next to Kurt's shirt.

Here is a link to the audio I recorded at the Nirvana "From Nowhere to Nevermind" panel today at the EMP. Enjoy! (Sorry for no video... the file size was too big for me to host.)

No problem. I know there are Nirvana fans that live too far away to be able to get to this exhibit, so I thought pictures are better than nothing. I know a lot of the older forum members don't like some of the more obsessive Nirvana fans, but they should have seen the opening. There were so many kids and young teens picking up a guitar in the guitar room and taking an interest in music. Like Nirvana or not, if it sparks a passion for music in people it can't be all bad. :)

Agree. I picked up guitar because of Nirvana. But somehow most of us have to moved on to other stuffs besides Nirvana.

Nice photos! Seeing these gave me flashbacks of my teenage days. Slacking around...cranking up the radio with Nirvana, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Live, CandleBox, RATM...

Thanks for sharing.

Me too! I had major flashback of watching MTV awards and Headbanger's Ball. It is strange to see something you have seen on TV or in pictures in real life right in front of you. Sort of like seeing a famous painting in person after seeing pictures of it. It is a different experience.

You're the best HNB! AWESOME meeting Earnie! Thanks for the pictures and audio, as I live on the east coast and won't experience this for quite some time yet.

Totally happy to do it. I knew there would probably be a few people here that would want to see pics. The panel was really good. I wish I could have the video posted too, but the file size is just too big. Earnie was cool. He confirmed my pickguards autograph and was nice enough to sign my trem plate that went with it. His main concern was I was going to sell it or something. NEVER. :) Considering he wasn't there for autographs and stuff and was kind enough to give one and pose for a picture, I was beyond thrilled and appreciative.

It is so great for people to get to see these in person. There is something surreal about seeing something in person like that. For a Nirvana fan, I don't see how it could get better other than getting to touch them or check out their wiring.

No problem. :) I need to hit there again. One of the only reasons I paid to be a member there is to go there for free as much as I want. :)

No problem. I wish lighting was better. No flash allowed and dim lights make taking pics hard.
