Custom Jazzstang Finished Page 3

I got this body and pickguard for Christmas. A builder I know made it for me. It is a contoured Mustang body shape with Jazzmaster pickup, bridge, and tremolo routes. It is full scale and poplar. (Old wood Mustangs were once made of.) It is a one piece body.

The body's builder also sent me Z Poxy to grain fill and seal the body. The stuff is very nice because you don't have to be perfect when you mix it. Get as close as you can though so it will dry. Just use a small piece of hard plastic like a credit card or spatula to spread it on thin and even.

Sand it nice and smooth when you are done with fine sand paper. The smoother you get it, the smoother your paint coats will go on.

Apply your primer coats next. This was a good time for me to find epoxy runs that I couldn't see since the epoxy is mostly clear. Sand those off smooth and put more primer on.

Paint your color coat on and then clear when finished. I haven't clear coated, but here is my first coat of metallic green.

All finished with the green paint. The funny thing is it looks blue in photos. It is green. When I put the mint guard on, the color looked much more like it does in person. Deep sparkle green. There are a couple lines that seem to have just been on the body. Not a huge deal, but the metallic color shows them. Once clear is on, it will be glossy smooth. The line will probably still show, but I think otherwise it is perfect. Pictures. 😀

Did my first coat of clear. I think I will need to do at least one or two more before I do the nitro clear final coat. The rough metallic and glitter are still showing through and I don't want to sand that paint flat so I will build up more clear.

I really dig your creativeness... seems like a lot of people nowadays aren't thinking outside the box. I really enjoy reading your posts and looking at your builds. I am personally doing some custom work to my Jaguar, I'll post pictures of the process... I need some money first hahaha.

Thanks! I am excited to see how it finishes up and sounds. I have some Seymour Duncan Hot Jazzmaster pickups for it. Need to finish painting first. 😀

Well since I am in Washington, many of you could probably guess that it isn't ideal for painting. It feels like it rains more days than it doesn't here. Normally (because I am low tech) I hang my coat hanger guitar paint thingy from my garage door to paint, but it has been too dark because of rain and winter. Also too wet to paint well like this. Doing a bit of creative thinking, I thought "What would a serial killer do?" My answer: "Hang it from the ceiling with a hook and a chain." I also put a lamp out there to help me see where I am painting. Seemed to work well. Pictures are below. Something odd that I noticed (and it could be because the temperature is lower and the paint is wet) was I could visually see by color on the back of the guitar where all the deepest routing was. The paint looked a little darker there. Probably something that will go away when it dries, but it was strange for sure.

Good news is after a couple hours drying you cannot see that anymore. My guess is because the wood is thinner there than anywhere else that the wood there got a bit colder there than the rest in the garage while I was painting and that lead the clear to look a little white until it dried. Pretty interesting though.

lookin awesome as usual dude! thats a real interesting colour too. in the pics it looks a little like that Old Lake Blue on the jap mustangs.

Got another layer of clear on. Going to try to wetsand it tomorrow and see how it looks. If it polishes up nicely than I will call it good. If I see things I don't like when I polish, I will spray more clear on.
