I am thinking about selling my 2005 Squier 51 that has over $300 in mods and a brand new fret redress. After I got the mods and everything done, I found myself playing the guitar less and less due to the 25.5" scale. I really enjoy playing the Jag-Stang more with it's 24" scale. After looking at building a Mustang my total price came out to just under $850.00. Admittedly, I never played a guitar with a Seymour Duncan JB so I was looking at putting that in the bridge. I also already have my Jag-Stang with the custom Curtis Novak humbucker and I love it to death. So, maybe I should just build or buy a normal Mustang with single coils?? My question basically is, at $850 dollars for a build that includes having it painted, since I have no build experience or wiring experience on a guitar, would it make more sense for me to just save the extra $150.00 and buy either the new KC Mustang or a CP Mustang? Someone also offered me a 1994 65RI Mustang in Olympic White with a tort guard and it already has a JB in it for $700 OBO. I was thinking I could offer him like $550 for it cause he has been trying to sell it for a while and really needs the money. My only complaint with that is it looks like since it's from 1994, it was hand-routed for a bucker and it doesn't have the screw in between the bucker and the bridge, making it too close to the bridge as I've heard others complaining. Any suggestions on this?? Thanks in advance.

Help me understand what you mean with the humbucker being too close to the bridge. Got a pic? Other than that, if you can snag it for $550 I say do it if you are secure about the above mentioned issue.

^^ This is an example of what I've heard as "the humbucker being too close to the bridge" producing too much of a twangy bright sound and making it more difficult to dial in tones.

Posted Image

^^ Notice on this one that there is a nice small gap between the bridge and the humbucker route, including an extra spot for a screw in there. I have heard that this is the ideal setup and it is alot nicer for dialing in tones.

Although, since I already have a Jag-Stang with a HS setup, I am thinking about maybe buying that Olympic White Mustang and taking it back to a SS setup and get a Lace Sensor red for the bridge and a Lace Sensor silver for the neck. Thanks for your help Davy D, or your effort nonetheless. I hope you can better understand the humbucker issue I was talking about.

i doubt that moving the pickup those extra 5mm closer makes much difference.

Thanks for the input guys. I have thought about it more and don't really want to buy the KC Mustang, as I said before I am leaning towards Lace Sensor single coils in the Mustang I'm looking to get. If you didn't already know, that's not a single coil in the bridge position on the KC Mustang. That's what is known as a humbucker. Thanks for the input smallclone, but I already have a Jag-Stang with an HS setup. Again, I am leaning towards having a Mustang with an SS setup.

I understand you were just trying to help. I was hoping you would be able to take a light-hearted joke, but that was not the case. All is good, you're right I'm wrong. Thanks for your help everyone.

Ohh I get it. That would definitely make me need to play it first. I could see that making the tone thinner.

Yeah, since I have no way to play it first right now, I think I am just going to stick to looking for a Mustang with an SS route and maybe put some Lace Sensors in it. I just am not sure if I should look at buying one or building one for $850. I suppose I could easily buy a '65RI for much less than $850 if I look for second hand and save the leftover money to get the Lace Sensors for it.

See, this is the point. The original question flew right over your head. My original question was if it would be cheaper for me to build a Mustang or to buy a Mustang, hence the title of the thread "Buy or build?". The point of this post was not to ask if I should purchase the Kurt Cobain Mustang, which is what you answered back, and also where I was kidding around with you and you couldn't handle it. I don't care how many of the billions of Mustang's there are "out there", I just wanted to know which would be cheaper.

This made me laugh out loud. Please grow up, I'm sorry if I offended you. None of my posts require you to try to get under my skin. I never intended to offend you. Again, I can not stress this enough to you, I don't care "if I'm man enough to build a guitar". This thread can die now, it has somehow transformed into you thinking this is an argument out of light-hearted joke. Please, for the sake of other humans communicating with you, relax and mellow out a bit. Also, I do appreciate that you were trying to help me out. Seriously man...

If you're set on a stang w/ single coils, I'd say just spend your 850 on something vintage. There's just something about old guitars that feels different. Then if you don't like it, sell it for what you paid, at least. That won't happen if you build your own.

Seriously man...... you did the math yourself in your first post... and honestly if you know basicly nothing about building a guitar, does it even matter how much cheaper it could be? it could end up being lots more if you screw it up! seriously this thread was actually pointless in that respect. just saying. i was mearly trying to nudge you in the right direction. nothing wrong with the KC mustang, its made of alder and above all else would blow your jagstang out of the water. the 65 reissue, is slab board and has no contours and for most mustang owners thats a huge turn off. you can always swap a pickguard on the KC for a SC set up. but if you dont mind the slab board get that. The market on ebay is flooded with japanese reissues made of basswood and cheap japanese hardware because since the KC came out, everyone is dumping their old reissues. the vintage market is great but i havent seen too many go for the money youre willing to spend but you might get lucky.

im building one because i enjoy doing it, no stranger to a soldering iron and im left handed so the market is slim pickings at any giving time, esp for a 69 compstang.

Honestly nothing you said offended me, im just crapping on your thread. A condescending snidester like yourself should know that. ;)
