Fender Jag-Stang Review

Author: Mel

Ultimately, with regards to the price, this guitar is a 10. I brought a fiesta red model (around £325 I think) way back in 2005 and was impressed to say the least when I purchased it.

Like the late Kurt Cobain, although I have long fingers, my hands are quite small and petit, so the scale length is perfect and I can fly all over the fret board. It's a great guitar to play and you never want to put it back down.

The weight is great too - I wanted a balance between a Les Paul (too heavy) and a Strat (too light) and the Jagstang fulfills my needs. I can dive around on stage pulling off my moves and the body just feels like an extension of mine - lush!

The action is pretty cool too, like most fender models. I haven't messed about too much with the action, intonation etc, as it played pretty damn good originally, although some slight mods have been made since. Highlight the word 'slight'.

The only thing I could knock the guitar for is the pick ups. The humbucker at the bridge is pretty weak sounding compared to what I was after - I'm currently in the process of getting a Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB pickup installed at the bridge. Hopefully this will give it more 'beef' and drive in the bottom end and make me the happiest guitarist in the world. The same goes for the single coil at the neck.

These are all preferences, so every guitarist is different and all depends on type of music you play and how you wanna sound. Can you imagine Slash with a Fender? Or Jimi playing Les Pauls? Everyone has different needs.

I've changed the tone and volume pots to chrome to make it look a bit more sexier - but that's just personal preference. I like the body shape too - it's great to play live, but also not a pain in the arse when sitting down like a flying V or alt models.

I'll be honest, I don't use the tremol bar much, if at all. If mucks up the tuning in my opinion. I guess thats a drawback if you are a heavy user.

At the end of the day, with a few mods for personal preference, you can make this guitar sound like YOU. And ultimately, that has always been my aim so thumbs up in my opinion.
