Fender Cyclone Review

Author: alex

I'm a big fan of the cyclone. i bought mine back in '99, not long after fender brought them out.

standard cyclone setup, bolt-on maple neck with rosewood fretboard, sc neck (texas special) hb bridge (atomic), 1 volume and 1 tone control, vintage tremolo. i had my heart set on a reissue mustang before i bought it...but when i got to the shop, i played them side-by-side and the cyclone blew it away.

i've changed a few things, namely immobilizing the tremolo, replacing the volume knob with the larger j-bass style (try it, it makes rolling the volume while playing much easier), schaller strap-locks, and having the brigde p/u rewound for a bit fatter tone. i'm thinking that i might replace the bridge p/u with a humbucker-sized p-90 for a fatter tone yet, but time will tell.

overall, the guitar is fantastic. i've never really mistreated it, bt it has encountered more than it's fair share of bangs and bruises, and it has help up really well. i've done most of my own work on it, including re-soldering the ground wire when it broke, and i have to admit that fenders are the best guitars around in terms of durability and service, in the event something does go wrong (read "fenders are TOUGH).

the guitar sounds great and plays great too. i'm very pleased with the action and intonation, and although the latter might take a while to get dialed in right, it stays in tune and intoned like nothing i've ever played. the neck pickup is where its at for clean, sparkly tone and bluesy drive. the bridge pickup does heavy chords and fast riffs cleanly and powerfully.

i do wish that the guitar has separate tone controls, but that would complicate it's design and steer it away from the mean machine it is. i might also wish it had a hardtail bridge...i can't really see myself ever using a tremolo, but i suppose it's nice to have there as an option.

i recommend this guitar for anyone who only wants one guitar that can do practically anything. i like mine so much that i'm planning to buy the hh one soon.
