I have a 2003, made in mexico fender cyclone in black finish with brown pearl pickguard, with single coil tex mex, strat single coil pick up in neck position and atomic humbucker a bridge. Guitar is still as standard. I will start off with the bad points of this guitar.
1. single coil texmex pickup is poor in my opinion, sound quality not the greatest. i plan to replace this with a sd hotrails pickup as soon as i can.
2. im not a big fan of the strat style bridge, would much prefer a mustang style bridge.
Now the good.
This guitar looks good, with similar styling and shape to a mustang (which i sold to buy this guitar). has better sound in my opinion than a mustang, with the addition of an excellent humbucker at the bridge. Has improved features than the mustang too, basically with the addition of a humbucker. What i kind of wish i did was kept the mustang though and changed the pickups as all in all it was a better guitar! i've got ideas entering my head now lol!
i would have o say that both this and the mustang are pretty similar, with the mustang having the better bridge and the cyclone having the better guitar. if i had to give advice on which one to go for i would probably advise to go for the mustang, but change the pick ups, maybe a humbucker and get rid of that stupid stripe which all the reissues seem to have (never been a fan)
