Jag Noise

Just picked up a used 2000 Jag (CIJ), and have a question. I get quite a hum out of the guitar plugged into a blues jr. It seems that when I plug the guitar in, if I touch the metal end of the guitar cable the humming is drastically reduced. Once I let go, she's loud again. Do you think there may be a grounding problem somewhere? Perhaps the input jack? I love the sound of this guitar but would really like to reduce the noise.

Also, it didn't take long to discover that a different bridge ( Mustang bridge) would be required!

deffinately sounds like a grounding problem, most probably the input jack - like you said.

what's it like if you touch the strings, or one of the metal control plates?

buy a new cable

also check if a wire inside the guitar is loose, thats what happened to my guitar and i resoldered it so it stoped humming

thanks for the help. I found the problem. Ground wire under the trem plate came loose. Put the plate back on with the ground wire sandwiched between the metal plate and the body. No playing noise free. 😁😁

it could be easy for that wire to not be in place, if someone took the trem off and didn't realise they had to put it back between the plate and the body

Hey all, newbie to the forum here, but Fender obsessive, with a particular Jag fetish..!

However, I'm having some problems with a 2003 CIJ Jag...big ground issues, noise gets worse when you touch the strings...

I dug out a wiring schematic and opened her up...the ground wire is still under the trem plate, but I've got nothing grounding the input jack...only the green wire coming off one of the lugs...should the input jack be directly connected to ground in some way? There's no sign of a wire...

I can post pics if that would help...

Any help or advice gratefully received...

My Jaguar does not have the extra wire on the output jack for the ground as well, but that's because the ground for the input jack is actually metal-on-metal contact with the metal control plate, and is supposed to be carried through the plate to the pot casings, where the extra ground wire connects to a brass plate, which is networked with several other brass sheilding plates via black wires, and connected to other ground points on the switch casings and so fourth, which are all in turn connected to the control plates via metal (read CONDUCTIVE to electricity) contact.

It sounds to me you have a loose ground wire somewhere, I'd see if the plates are all connected properly (if it has them, some Jaguars I've read have black sheilding paint instead of brass plates like mine has).

The brass plates lay across the bottom of the control cavities. The original 60's Jaguars had a whole brass "Tub" in there for electrical sheilding. The CIJ Jaguars have 4 of these plates, one in the lead circuit control cavity, one in the pickup selector cavity, another under the pickups that also runs through the wiring channel under the pickguard, and another one in the rhythm circuit control cavity. They are all interconnected by black wires.

That little piece of gold sticking out of my vol/tone cavity in this picture is one of the brass plates. However, I've read some of the earlier reissues have black sheilding paint like the Jag-Stang's have.

No brass, black paint like you said...one of the grounds had worked loose from the rhythm circuit...now I've just gotta sort the trem lock again and re-intonate it...the curiousity to examine the removed bridge design got the better of me... 😁

I know, I thought I threw that in there but did'nt (I think faster than I type). However, him telling me his is a CIJ, which is a later model than mine throws me for a loop, I thought the sheilding paint was a 90's MIJ thing. So apparently, I may have got one of the last bodies to use the plates.

the early E series jags, the first ones from perhaps '87 (or sometime mid 80s) had them. but they weren't as thick as the american ones and were held in with sticky tape, instead of glazier points. i thought they might have stopped doing it, and used shielding paint, pretty early in the 90's. but could obviously be wrong...

My CIJ S/N: AXXXXXX has the brass shielding. I think this is a 97-98 model.

That's exactly the same series as mine (AXXXXXX serial #) CIJ 97-98. I have no idea when or where Fender transferred. Maybe it was only on Alder bodies that had the gold plates, I dunno, I know mine's Alder by the weight and how dent-proof it is.
