They're exactly the same. Only difference is the "Designed by Kurt Cobain" sticker on the back is now a decal. The reissues aren't "2004 reissues" necessarily, they only just stopped making them earlier this year.
Anyway, whoever told you that is stupid. Paying more for the "originals" is stupid too, because there's no difference. They're not even reissues, they're the same guitar, they just stopped making them for a while. It's not like the old ones are vintage.
And also, a lot of people say no Jag-Stangs are good. I disagree. Mine's 2004 as it happens, and it plays like a dream (come true!).
