Fender '78 Musicmaster - PICS!!!!

Hey guys, just wanted some opinions on this guitar. I've never owned one or played one but I have a guy that wants to trade up his black '78 for my SB MIM Deluxe Tele for it. I see that it has only one pick up, so of course no toggle, but what is the tone like? I imagine since the pup is up in the neck, the tone would be warm and beefy, but I dunno. Just wanted some opinions.

it'll sound good, i'd play it through your set-up before you trade though, you might like the tele better.

I have a Bronco, which is very similar to the Musicmaster, but a bridge pickup and trem. I sold my CIJ Telecaster for it, and I'm very happy with that decision.

I have a 76 MM and its a gorgeous guitar to play, however, the one pup on MM's can be limiting.

You'll get great funky tones and aplenty of Fender twang, it will also encourage you to use your volume/tone controls more to find different sounds. Something a lot of guitarists dont do.

There is the option of mods but it will lower the value in the case of a resale. My MM has a SD Hotrail fitted in the bridge position;

I would trade fo sure if you like how it plays. 😉

Yours looks great, looks alot like a 'stang. Minus the phase in/out switches. I like the pickguard too.....the '78 he's offering me looks like this apparently.

I GOT IT!!!!!!!!!! And man is it beautiful! I'll post pics of her soon. I ended up trading up my Epi LP for it. Sooooooooooooo SWEET!

I dare say you'll lurve her forever. If you can get by with the one pup i'd keep it that way too, its value will increase that way over time.

As you can see, some of the parts aren't original and the guy routed out a hum in the bridge position and added a 2 way toggle switch. Bridge also isn't original. But the NECK! Oh the neck is stellar. So playable it hurts. And the OHSC was just the icing on the cake....I couldn't wait to hand him the Epi LP and hit the road, I almost felt bad for the guy....trading an American '78 MM for a '04 Epi.............almost felt bad. 😆

I suppose its a bonus with the HB fitted and bridge upgrade (looks like a Tone-pro's bridge), it looks like the machine heads have been changed too.

Anywayz, you got one hell of a guitar there. I completely agree about the 70's MM necks, they are one of the best i've played.
