CIJ Jaguar Feedback/high pitched squeal

I recently purchased a CIJ Jag. It is in great condition. The only thing is, when I plug it in and use any kind of distortion, if I'm not strumming the strings I get this loud monotone feedback type sound kind of like the sound of a television when the station goes out of service. Unlike other feedback I have experienced on a strat I can't stop this feedback from happening by simply placing my hands on the strings to mute it. To stop this sound from happening, the only thing I can do is turn the volume off on the guitar.

Does anyone have any ideas? Is this a normal problem? It has stock pickups and has been stored in a gig bag for a few years. It is clean as a whistle.

are you talking about actuall feedback or just loud humming?

if its either of these you need to wax pot the pickups or rewire the guitar...

a noise suppresor pedal if none of the above works maybe?

edit: also check yr jack that can cause those kind of problems... maybe your cable is broken?

I think I must be talking about a loud humming because unlike 'feedback' it doesn't stop when I try to mute it. I mostly concerned about how to control it when I play live. I guess this is normal? What does waxing do? Is it common? And what kind of re-wireing would I have to do? Does this stuff cost a lot?

if we're talking about 60 cycle hum here, and not feedback, then rewiring or wax potting won't do anything. the only solution to this problem is to get a reverse wound/reverse pole neck pickup and then turn both pups on to cancel the hum

i dont know man, i rewired my guitar when it was humming and the humming was gone

did you rewire it differently than it came, or just re soughter it? Also, can you get low action on the guitar?

Sounds like feedback from the pickups to me, since you say its rather high pitched which humming or buzzing tend not to be. Your best bet would be to wax pot your pickups - you can do it yourself quite easily look here: http://www.guitarnuts.com/technical/ele ... /index.php

Another option would be to replace your pickups with the american vintage jaguar ones which i think you can get from

http://www.guitarpartsresource.com Since the american ones are completely wax potted already they should not feedback oh and they also do that reverse wound thing rick mentioned.

I don't think it's feedback because I can't make it stop by simply turning to a certain angle from the amp or by placing my hands on the strings like I would be able to with other guitars. I can get the pickups that came stock waxed can't I. For affordability, I might have to try that first.

mine is a crappy squier strat copy and i dont know much about jag wirings...

i did you try another cable? that can be the thing

sounds like a grounding issue to me.

Microphonic feedback sounds like squeeling and whistling, and happens occasionally not constantly. Microphonic problems are solved by waxed potting but i dont think that'll help in this case.

if you say your strat (which also has single coils) DOESNT get the same noise in the same room, then it's not 60 cycle hum.

The jag has a complex wiring schematic - i think a wire has come loose and is not touching somewhere it should be. A grounding wire not properly hooked up the bridge would mean your guitar doesnt get grounded when you touch the strings - which it seems is your problem.

Does the sound happen equally on both and the lead and rhythm circuits?

Sounds to me like the p/ups need waxed. It's not normal feedback from the strings or whatever, it's from the p/ups rattling and squealing. Wax potting them can be done by yourself to the stock p/yups and it will solve the problem. I can almost guarantee it.

yeh, re-reading the original post, i was wrong it DOES sound like microphonic feedback.

either get your pickups wax potted or buy a new pair (Fender AV Jag pickupss seem to give the most *true* jag sound..go for SDs if you want hotter)
