Best website to purchase Jag Equip??

Hi Everyone,

I received a lot of help from you all in regards to the "BODY" thread I had put up before. My new guitar is in Vancouver and should be here by the end of the week hopefully (live in Calgary). In the meantime I'd like to purchase what sounds to be the key peices of gear for the American 1962 Reissue (Sunburst) Jaguar.

1) BUZZ STOP

2) MUSTANG BRIDGE (should I get both? one tech is saying just the Buzz Stop)

3) QP Bridge Pickup by Seymour Duncan.

I'm going to need to order all three things online, so which online store would you recommend?

Preferably I'd like to order them all from the same place (one order).

From what I've read most people only use one or the other, but I think Doog uses both. Using both together will definitely not be detrimental, it just seems a bit overkill.

One thing though, by all means draw up a list of what you theoretically would want, but don't go ordering anything until you've played with your Jag first. Draw your own conclusions on whether you want something else before carving your Jag up.

Everyone seems to have a different opinion on the buzz stop vs mustang bridge. I'll buy all em both so at least I have them on hand. And will start with the original pickup, but again will have the QP pickup on hand as well.

Are you in the UK? Fancy buying some Mustang Saddles? They're still sealed in their packet, and it's cheaper to get these than buy a whole new bridge assembly.

my jag came with the buzz stop, i didn;t mind it too much, then i took it off and put on a mustand bridge. honestly, i prefer the mustang bridge.

it does the job, and it does it well.

did you say av jag?

i wouldn;t change the pup. the av pups are actually great.

unless you are looking for the teh kurtz.

you dont need the buzzstop AND the mustang bridge, out of the 2 i'd take the mustang bridge, because the grub screws of the jag bridge will fall out of place and the mustang bridge wouldnt. so do take the mustang bridge

i dont think you need a new pickup, the american ones that you already have are pretty good.

yeah, guitar parts resource is a pretty good store and the prices and shipping are pretty resonable

My new Ishibashi VNW Jaguar should be coming today, fingers crossed, I'm also a UKer heh.

I might want to get some of these parts myself...are they swappable onto Left-Handed Jag's or will I need to get some funky lefties version of all this stuff?

Personally i'd forget the Mustang bridge, its for lazy people that cant be bothered to set their Jag bridge up right.

I have a Buzzstop... it may look quirky but i find no improvement whatsoever with it on.

I also have a SD QP in the bridge... its a good upgrade if you want more 'meaty' sounds and less noise without modifications. Plus because it is a intended Jaguar pickup the cover and claw fits onto the pickup easily.

a lot of people don't know what the buzzstop is actually for- it stops the strings ringing out between the tailpiece and bridge. it's a very subtle thing, and the mustang bridge mod is entirely unrelated. that you could actually do yourself... some people use a bit of duct tape over the strings in that area, robert smith made a buzzstop using two bolts and a bit of rubber tubing...

but as for "you don't need a buzzstop AND mustang bridge," a more accurate way of putting it would be you don't need either... but they each address different issues people have with the jag/jazzy, they don't solve the same problems.

I read somewhere, it couldve been on FDP that the buzzstop improves sustain. I dont hear any difference, one thing the buzzstop does do is get in the way of the tremelo arm.

Robert Smiths concoption sounds useless, rubber would prevent the strings travelling back up to pitch if you where to dive the bar. Then again, he was'nt total RAWK was he.

I put a buzz stop on, and what it basically did was increase the string tension a bit, and tightened up the feel of the guitar, which was especially useful when I was using 10`s for strings. I think it added a little sustain on the high end, and I was sure it improved things, but then I`d played the guitar with the stock bridge and no buzz-stop for many years with no real difficulty. I recently got a Mustang bridge, and I tried it with and without the buzz-stop. The thing that`s worked best, so far, is the Mustang bridge with no buzz-stop and 11`s [11- 48] for strings. I find that the Mustang bridge adds a lot of tone and sustain to the guitar, because the saddles are more massive, and have fewer moving parts to lose vibrations in between, and they make a more solid contact with the bridge assembly. I`ve come to prefer the feel of the heavier strings, and I find that the tension is just right for me with the buzz-stop off. The buzz-stop makes things feel a bit stiff.

I'd go for http://www.guitarpartsresource.com too (despite them getting my orders wrong twice!). Fast shipping and they've got almost everything you're looking for.

I've not tried the mustang bridge but I have the buzzstop on one jag and I've got another jag without one. Personally, I agree with hoddyman on the buzzstop making things a bit more stiff. The 'additional' sustain is neglible but the main problem it solved for me is preventing the strings from popping out of the bridge (especially low 'E' string). Somehow, I've chosen not to use a buzzstop for my newer jag cos of the stiffness and it sorta kills the ringing feel to jags which I kinda like. Of course, I'd have to be more careful with heavy strumming/plucking to prevent the popping of strings. One main complaint of the buzzstop (to me) is actually the potential string buzzing due to the extra downward angle it's pulling the string against the intonation screws at the back of the bridge. Finally, I'd never thought I'd say this but it's true that a jag can still function optimally without one 😆

With about two hours work you can get the stock bridge working flawlessly, buying a mustang bridge or saddles really is'nt necessary but i'm not knocking anyone that wants to do that.

As for the 'ringing' sound behind the bridge i think that is a part of the Jags character and does'nt bother me personally.

Hey, I did that for my new jag too and it improved the situation 😀 Mine's mainly due to my upstrokes instead, so I raised the outer grub screw *lol*

I can imagine it happening the other way if you play Ska/Skank alot. Most peoples downstroke has more attack and force.

Hey guys.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their response. The guitar arrived in Calgary yesterday just as I was leaving for Toronto. Merry Christmas. Ultimately I've decided to go with the Mustang Bridge and the QP neck pup that I'm ordering tonight. I'll be back in Calgary on the 29th and will post a couple of pics. Hopefully I'll be using it in addition to my main axe for the upcoming album that I'm recording in February and will also post some audio.

Once again, thanks guys. It seems that Jag owners are extremely passionate about thier instrument and not shy of sharing their tips. Glad to become a part of it.
