man i hate pentatonic scales. im pretty sure ive exhausted any posibility of soloing around one.

can anybody tab out some crazy exotic scale to help me out of the pentatonic box?

Look into modes, there's all your "exotic scales" right there, and they're all based around the same scale.

Ionian - Major scale

Dorian - Minor scale with raised 6th

Phrygian - Minor scale with flat 2nd

Lydian - Major scale with sharp 4th

Mixolydian - Major scale with flat 7th

Aeolian - Minor/Relative minor scale

Locrian - Minor scale with flat 2nd and 5th

Most of the time, the modes just change one note from the scale it came from, but they can sound pretty exotic

Learn Melodic and Harmonic minor. They're definatly two of the more interesting. Harmonic minor is nice because it's really easy to apply, and is basically just natural minor with a natural seven. The reasoning for the natural seven is to have a dominant V chord. Melodic minor is a bit harder to get the sound of into your head, but once you learn how to use it, it can be really great and weird, or beautiful.

Why do people think that by learning scales and modes you suddenly turn into a robotic session guitarist??

Music is like painting.. why stick with 3 colours? Any extra knowledge is good knowledge, people who fear music theory and scales are just kidding themselves that by not knowing anything, it keeps it more pure.

I mean, I rarely use scales or theory when writing, it's all done by "what I think sounds cool", it's not like somehow I'm a more boring player for expanding my horizions. But it does make me/you/them/us better musicians.

no not really, its good knowing scales, because you can make more #### than you could with just the few pentatonic basic ones.

scales are interesting, i never bothered to learn any, altho i was told that i was playing some sort of scale the other day.

there are more tools on the guitar than just the strings.

keep that in mind.

I have to agree. I used to hate knowing musical theory because I did think it ruined the whole fun of finding stuff out for myself, but then I realised it's pretty rude to shun the findings of years, decades, even centuries of musical discovery. We have only 12 notes and we've been making music since... well just about forever. Do the maths, it doesn't take long for us to do everything with those notes. Learning scales helps. When I play scales I don't think "this is the minor blues scale", I see the sounds I can make from that scale in my head and memorise particular licks that I can do on that scale and then play those out. It helps to know the theory about them when learning, but in practice you don't think of that at all.

yeah, im gonna get a new teacher soon and start learning some new scales.

what i dont like most is notes, theyre so boring and those ####ty book excecises. theyre so annyoing

Idk if anyone has ever heard of this scale its called Hexatonic, Im not really sure how to explain it really, its very asian sounding I will try and write a tab for you, also there Hungarian Minor which I have only heard of and never really played. 😆 but yeah I will see if I have anything that has some cool scales and post them for ya.

Learning scales is also a very good way to excersise your fingers and get them to move around the frettboard more fluidly. Not that I'm one to talk, I suck at guitar, but it's true, even just playing the basic major scale up and down the neck increases your knowledge of the frettboard.

What people who don't know theory seem to think is that theory tells you what you're supposed to do. It doesn't at all. It basically merely gives a name to anything you can do. Everything anyone has ever done on a guitar is explained by music theory.

music theory is great. i took 3 years of lessons and learned a lot and i think im a better player. im thinking a botu taking music theory as an elective next year at school. maybe then scales will come easier to me.

I wish I had a teacher, but alas school and, well, being cheap... I have to learn theory on my own......which is not very easy...maybe I just don't have the right resources.
