Stereo Jaguar Project

okay, so i'm trying to make my Lefty CIJ Fender Jaguar into a stereo guitar. By "stereo" i mean taking separate outs for each pickup. So i would have the neck pu go to my Ampeg V4 and the bridge pu go to my Yahama T100. Right now i'm just using the Neck PU and running it to my Ampeg with distortion, and i know there's that next level i can push for playing live. My band, "Ikiru", doesn't have a bass player. We just use Fenders played through bass amps and there's more than enough low-end to punch through. We also use the pedals of a Hammond M101 Organ! anyway... anyone who could help with the diagram or modification without hacking up my Jaguar will be the greatest Jaguar Master alive! (well, for me that is.)

this guy stitch from mothers anger did that to his 63 and then to his baritone custom. i have not seen him around for a wihle but you could try getting ahold of him, he would be able to tell you everything you need to know.

yeah, i tried to get a hold of him, so we'll see what happens, but if and when i do figure out how to do what i'd like to do with my Jaguar, whether it be from this forum or another, i'll be sure to post the results.

why not just get a boss LS-2, and have the guitar going into 2 amps that way? you can set the volumes independantly and stuff.

seems a lot of trouble having 2 outputs from 2 pickups - but if you think its cool, i'd be interested in hearing the final result!

the jag is set perfectly for stero tho, its got the rythm section, for the neck pickup and then the norm section for the bridge, its just a matter of putting another jack to it and rewiring a bit. it really does seem like the best guitar for it.

when i open up the wiring, i tend to just close it back up. i would love to play around with it, but i'm not rich and Lefty Jags are hard to come by, so i don't want to "explore" unless i know exactly how to do it. Thanks everyone for the input! keep it coming if you can....

I don't have the schemtaic in front of me, but going by memory you're going to have to use one set of vol/tone controls for one pickup and the other set for the other pickup. Either that or one pickup would be without any tone/vol control. Which do you prefer?

Also, unless you're going to install an extra jack socket, you'll need to use a stereo out jack socket.

Ikiru, I've had a look at the wiring diagram for the Jag and it's pretty trivial to do what you want. If you PM me your email address I can send you the amended diagram, showing how I'd do it: there are a number of ways to do this, but what I have in mind will utilise all the switches.

I can't post it as AOL won't let me upload anything at the moment, plus it's copyrighted material (I amended seymour duncan's diagram).

It seems pretty simple to me. Just set the neck pickup to use the roller pots and have it's own jack, then set the bridge pickup to use the normal knobs and use the existing jack. Then make the switches to stuff. The rhythm switch could act as a neck pickup on/off switch, and one of the three other switches could do the same for bridge pickup. Then you have two spare switches to do stuff with. 😀

Stitch used the Jag in stereo because they dont use a bass player, the Jag fills the sound out great.

I spoke to him about this a while back and i'm not sure he carried out the mod on the Baritone? Anyway try getting hold of him on here....

i positive he did, he posted pics of it. he did like 4 knobs at the lower horn or something. they looked like the gold knobs off a gibson. i just remember him not being happy with the way it turned out. they don;t have a bass player live, but.... studio wise they had the bass player from the mc5 playing for them, very cool, if you havent already, try and pick up thier stuff. he gave me a free live cd that is pretty cool too.

Yeah, i think out of all the people in bands that have posted on these boards i like "the mothers anger" best.

I have them as friends on myspace and visit their page regularly, listen to the songs they have on there. But not asked stitch for a cd yet. I think you can actually download theur stuff free on there.....i'll have to check.

I can proudly say that the stereo Jag WORKS!

and pretty well. the sound options are between nice to over whelming.

the Jag is a perfect guitar to make into a stero as it was originally planned to be one. I made 4 guitars from normal (mono) to stereo. one with a strat style wring, a tele style wiring, fender Baritone and the Jag.

All work, althoug only Baritone and the (now stolen) Jag were 'full stereo'.

before I go any further with this you ('Ikiru') have to understand that you will need some courage and to believe that it's gonna be great and everything is fixable.

trust me it felt weird messing with that 40 year old Jag.

so if you wanna do this, i'll guide you through

well, after back and forth messaging with GP i finally have a working "Stereo" Jaguar! i took it to Guitar Center to get an Insert Cable (TRS to 2 MONO) and to test it out. Of course, every employee was saying, "dude, that's a sweet guitar. i'll buy it off you." but when i told them it was modded for stereo they were like, "no way. let me hear it." so i went up to two tube amps and plugged both in. i pushed a lot of gain for the Bridge and gave a nice rich tone for the Neck and holy crap! this thing sounded sweet! i thought the tone of one PU sounded great on this guitar, but with the ability to blend them without "combining" them, it sounds amazing! i even tried it on my Fender Champ and the tone is twice as good! if you are willing to try this, i would recommend it! i have the best tone i've ever had with my jag!!!

holy sh*t it worked!! so have you got a schematic then? i actually kinda wanna try it with my jag!.

i already tried outputing to 2 amps with my boss ls-2, and it sounds awesome, but it would be cool with 2 different pickups. My only problems would be that

1) the rhythem circuit is too bassy due to the 25k tone pot in there. my tip would be to buy another 1meg jaguar volume roller and stick it in as a replacement to the rhythm tone pot - so both lead and rhythm would have 1meg/1meg pots.

2) the bridge pickup on my jag sounds like sh*t on its own, really trebly and weak. but then again i still have the original CIJ pickups.

well, my band doesn't have a bass player so i need that low end from the Neck PU. but with the wiring i used, thanks to GP, the Lead Switch turns into a low-cut switch with an added capacitor. you can use the same kind (.003) as the low-cut for the Bridge PU or you can, as i did, put a .0047 in. the result is a low cut for the Neck that makes the PU less muddy and almost sounds like the mid PU of a strat! i still haven't upgraded my CIJ PU's either, and i know that would only make my guitar sound that much better. but trust me, with my Ampeg V-4 carrying the Neck low's and my Yamaha T100 driving the tone from the Bridge, i've never had such a rich tone! i'm sure i could send you the schematics and directions i used from GP. i keep giving him props, but for good reason. He was basically Tech Support all week. thanks for the intrest guys and any more questions, keep posting!
