it has to do with the vibration, put your chin on the guitar body, the body vibrates and it will vibrate in your chin bone. the vibration is compromised when you start using 2 and 3 peice bodies. i prefer the idea of a single piece of wood over glueing any day.
but basically different wood vibrates differently. pups deffinitly have more of a say in how it sounds than wood does. but wood really does have a say in it as well.
and i have heard basswood pronounced as bass, like the fish, wood.
its the same as linden wood, from linden trees.
