New guitar.

Hey everybody, just kind of asking a general kind of question. Im looking into buying a new guitar in a couple of months, and i was just wondering what you guys think i should get. Im really into hendrix/frusciante style stuff and funk, but at the same time i really wanna be able to get that heavily distorted, punk, classic rock kinda style. Also i want a very easy guitar to play and that easily played fast. I really just want a lot of versatility, because one day i can be into funk but hten the next i wanna let loose and just turn the distortion up to 11. And one last thing, its gotta have the looks to match the sound. One guitar that i hav been looking into is the fender 57 hot rod. Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

yea that was my first instinct, but then i just thought about it and relized a kinda want something different, ya know cuz i mean everyone pplays a strat!I mean i wud be fine, if not very happy with a strat, i just want to know if theres anything else.

get a strat, just get a cool unique one, i say: a surf green 50s stratocaster, thats exactly what your looking for tonewise and itll look alot cooler than everyone elses sunburst, red and black strats

Thats true, they don't look very 'individual' cos they're so popular, and they;re popular cos they're so good i guess! They certainly are the easiest guitar to play I've ever used but I know some people can't get on with them.

You could pick up a decent strat for not a lot of cash and then mod it up so it's more unique - hack bits off the scratchplate or splatter it with paint or whatever. And you can mess around with different pickups as well. That's the thing to do with any guitar if you really want to make it unique to you, in my opinion.

I'm not usually good at this game but even before I read any replies I thaught "Strat". You can get some awesome looking strats, and if, like people have suggested, you don't mind modding, hell, the strat is a total mod friendly blank canvas!

I also think you need a strat based guitar, it doesn't have to be Fender, I know what you mean, everyone has one.

Check out the other companies like Indie guitars they have some great guitars at varied prices.

I play funk as a preference, I use a 77 les paul ltd edition double cut with P90's through a Marshall TSL 100. I often leave the wah caracked open & use the neck pick up to get a nice clear funk rhythm sound, it also sounds great in that position in the dirty channel, for a full on lead sound.

You can get a load of sounds from any guitar if you experiment with it.

I am one of those who can't get on with strats, due to my manic rhythm style I keep turning the guitar off during playing, its cos of that volume knobs being too close to the strings, I have steered clear of them because of that.

thats a damn good point u got there! Oh man i would love to mod a strat, but i barely know anything on how to do that, and quite frankly dont really hav time to learn so id hav to hire someone to do it for me so im not sure how much money that wud be, but if i were to be able to make my own strat that wud be so great!!!!how does this sound? fiesta red or sunburst, mint green pickguard,50s style maple fingerboard, maple neck with satin finish, custom shop '69 pickups with a jb jr in the bridge with maybe a little gold hardware to spruce things up. Oh god, my mouth is watering already.

yeah the strats have a very common look but who cares they're very nice. you cant go wrong with it

You don't have to know anything to start customizing cosmetically - I started mucking about with my strat and tins of paint when I was about 14, and over the years it got more and more, err, individual:

As for scratchplates and necks, all you need is a screw driver and some common sense! and pickups are really incredibly easy to wire in as long as you've got a soldering iron and a bit of patience (or maybe a friend that does?!). At the end of the day though just see what you fancy, strats are great but there's a hell of a lot of other guitars to choose from!

My two modded Strat copies:

Started life with shoddy pickups, black with white PG, new pickups, added Neck-On Switch, Clipper Circuit, new knobs and new PG.

Charity-Shop Parts-O-Caster:

Started life Natural wood, no electronics, one working pickup, strat shaped black PG. Took lots of filler, but it's now ready for the respray before wiring it all up.

Just go nutts, you can do what the hell you want. Like people have said, they're a blank canvas!

Charity shops are great for bargains, I got a Husker Du CD and a Bob Mould CD in 'Dove House Hospice' the other day for 50p each! Inside the Husker Du CD there was a receipt for

WOW bob, that charity guitar is crazy!! 😁, from what u guys have said, im going to take modding a guitar into serious consideration, but lets say i were to get a just a strat that fender offers, what do you guys think would be the best one? Also if any of you guys think theres osmething besides a strat, thatd be great to hear as well

Cheers, it was a bit of a gamble, crazy idea I had on the way home from uni one day, but it worked out well.

I've never seen a guitar in a charity shop ever, but my dad's mother worked in one, and that came in so she baught it for me. Totally awesome present! It was my first electric guitar, so that's why I learned to mod guitars before I really got to play properly.
