My mate has one they're really cool, also if you put them in a metal bin (when using it with its own speaker) you get reverb which is nice. I agree they sound a lot better through an external speaker, probably due in part to the size although they're designed and made by Bruce Zinky who's amps are pretty coveted.

i have two, one of the original cigarette pack ones (started to fall apart) and a plastic-cased one. they sound pretty cool through a cab, i really just use them as travel amps though. you have to use the guitar's volume and tone knobs to get a good sound out of them that way. they really aren't anything special though, apart from the fact that you can get them in cigarette packs.

zinky manufacture a higher-gain version of the plastic smokey under the Supro name, clearly aimed more at the people running smokeys thru cabs:

The Cigarette ones definitely look cool, it would be cool to have a go at rehousing one and modding the #### out of it so you could control it a bit.

I did a little research, it's just a simple 386 based op amp circuit. Which to the non-electronic minded people is basically one of the simplest circuits you can build. I've already built a clean boost with essentially the same circuit inside, so I'm going to try running that through my bass cab, see what happens, if it works and sounds good I'm going to build myself a cheap cab and have me a small 9v practice amp.

Well, I built one last night for the scematic I found online, It's pretty cool, my sounds distorted as hell though, going to mod the circuit to try to get some more headroom out of it, and I haven't housed it yet so it sounds a bit weak, been experimenting putting the speaker face down on different boxes, sounds really cool. I'll try to find a way to get a sound sample online if I can but no promises because my soundcard sucks and I don't really have a decent mic, our family SM58 (it's dads but he never uses it so me and my bro share it) is in Wales now coz my bro's been using it.
