(Help) Installing New Pickups on Jaguar HH

Hi,

I just bought a pair of new pups for my jag, a pair of Dimarzios YJM (Neck) & (SH-3).

I would like to know what is the proper way of removing the stock pups. This is the first time I'm solering on a guitar.

I have a soldering Iron

60/40 wire

Clippers

Sponge

What else do I need to do this?? what is flux and what is it used for??

snip both pups halfway. unless you got enough wire on the pups to go to the original solder points.

just figure out positive and negative.

If you buy flux cored solder you will find soldering much easier. Try not to snip the pickup wires if you can help it. If you desolder the original wires you make the old pups more eBayable. If your new pickup wires are too short to reach the switch extend them with new wire. You will need to desolder the earth wire from the metal claw.

Because I sometimes change my bridge pickup between a single coil and a JBjr I've used bullet connectors so as to avoid resoldering each time.

ooh, what's a bullet connector? you can change pickups without re-soldering???

It's a connector used in car alectrical circuits which crimp fits onto a wire (I solder it too for security). I use them in my guitars for things like bridge earth wires so I don't have to de-solder each time I remove the scratchplate. I used one on the bridge pickup so that I can change it in seconds without soldering.

That's a really good idea Spitfire, I may have to do that myself.

I do need to extend the wires so I'm getting new wire for that as suggested. Is there a proper way extending a wire?? or should I just twist both ends together and maybe after doing that cover it up with black tape?

Sorry for the stupid question I've never done this before. 😛

Well the pickups are taking longer than what I expected but in the mean while...

I just got the pickguard 😎

I'm expecting the pups for tomorrow so if the do arrive I'll keep you posted.

Well it'll be a normal Jaguar but with a stop bar and a tune-o-matic, the HH seems to be a pretty good base to work on pickups wise, it would be cool to have a couple of wired up pickguards that you could just drop in whenever.

Agreed. I never liked chrome on chrome either.

I just got the new pups and I'm reading the instructions and all, it says:

Black & white cables go together, Red is "hot" and green & Bare are ground... OK cool that seems clear enough but the stock pickup I just removed only has ONE big black cable that goes to the tone and volume pots!

I was planning on just twisting togheter some cables and viola but since it's not the same layout I find my self stuck 😕

Should I just connect the "hot" of my new pup to that black cable? but what about the other ones "black,white,green & Bare"?

Any help is greatly appreciated... I'm dying to hear how these pups sound like ☹

That's the black wire I'm talking about.

The other cables that are visible run from the upper Volume/tone pots(NECK) to the lower switches "bass cut/pup selector" to volume/tone pots(bridge) and then finally to the output jack.

Good choice on the PG, I always thaught the one thing that let the HH Jag down was the boaring goth boy colour scheme, black on black, dull! Well done for livening it up!

After deciding that I'm not experienced enough to install a pair of single coils in my jaguar HH I went to a "guitar tech".🙄

I left him the jag with the pickguard off and all unscrewed "even the humbuckers where already out". I know this should only take an hour at most but he told me to leave the guitar and to come by in two days.😲

OK fine it sucks but whatever...

To make the story short after 4 days he called me to let me know that the pickguard that I bought doesn't fit but that the electronics where ready. So I came by to pick the guitar up and told him that I would get a new pickguard and that I would?_?_install it myself.

He charged me $50!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😠 :mad: 😠

I came home and installed an old pickguard that I had just to test the pups "by this time I'm kinda pissed" and after a few chords I find out that I have TWO F#@@#%NG VOLUME KNOBS!! one of my tone knobs is actually a F@#$NK VOLUME KNOB!

This guy not only ripped me off, took for ever but also?_?_?_?_?_?_did a lousy job!

Now I'll have to go back and wait some more:o 😠 :mad: 😠 :mad:
