Hi there, newbie here 😀

Tomorrow i should be picking up a new JGS-83 (Jaguar Special) from the Post Office, freshly delivered from Ishibashi 😁

I was thinking (already) about exchanging the pickups for some that i can split to get singlecoil sounds (probably using a push pull pot and either SD SH-3 Stag Mags, Riogrande Tallboys or Swineshead AMPs) as well as 'bucker sounds. My question really is how different are Jag singlecoils to regular singlecoils and what would be the best way to fit the pickups so i can use the regular Jaguar switches etc in both modes?

jag singles are essentially strat pups.

they are as run of the mill as you can get. the only diff is the mounting situation/claw/ adn the fact that it suns thru a different setup of switches and whatnot.

I've got an HH and put a SD stag mag in the bridge position, using the strangle switch to split it. I like it, but can't say whether it's any better or worse than other pups for splitting cos it's the only one I've tried. As single coil, I've compared it to my strat and it really sounds completely different, but there's a lot of variables so thats not surprising.

Want to do the same for neck but not got round to it. I would have to use a push-pull pot for that (can't send both pickups to the same switch) but haven't sat down to work out wiring yet - it should be possible to do what you want using 2 push/pull pots. That wouldn't interfere with the other switches or anything. If you have a clue about wiring i don't think it would be that difficult. I'll try and draw some diagrams tonight if I get a chance - it's about time I did mine anyway

hey pedro, did you ever get any soundclips of that up? I'd love to hear how the single coils sound.

Also is the split coil the one nearest or furthest from the bridge? Would make a pretty big sound difference; in this instance, might be better to split to the one furthest away.

Ha! That's what GAS does for ya! How are you coping with only 2 guitars now? 😆

I recorded soundclip as an mp3 but don't know where to post it so you can all listen to my crap playing - any suggestions?

As far as positioning goes, good point. I went for a compromize really and used the coil furthest from the bridge. Reason being that when you split the coil there's a drop in output anyway, and with the signal being weaker towards the bridge I wanted to compensate a bit. To be honest it means the tone is a bit neither here nor there so I might change it and see if I can live with a slightly bigger drop in output.

Yeh the tone thing - i thought the furthest one would sound best, but yeh to get the most "jaguar" like tone, the one closest to the bridge is best. Just flip the humbucker next time you change strings.

Nope not Cornish but a name i use with the band i'm in atm 😆

I'm thinking that using the outer coils would probably get me close to a Jaguar sound... i listened to the Swineshead AMP pups and they do have a fender vibe when in singlecoil mode... it's just now figuring where to put the split (pots or switch) 🙄

i'd just have one split on each of the two pots.

make the most sense and gives the most options!

Mmm... so one on the volume and one on the tone...

Now if i do that would it still work on the rhythm circuit?

i'm thinking of putting in some Bare Knuckle pick-ups (don't know which model yet), probably in aged nickel which looks quite cool. i'll probably figure on some sort of series/parallel wiring - but i'm going to leave that to a pro - the Jag wiring confuses me enough as it is.

Someone here (can't remember if it was Daevid) was talking about replacing the chrome knobs on the HH - i was thinking the same, but traditional Jag knobs seem to have a screw and these chrome ones don't - they have a thread. Do the black platic ones have a thread as well or are they smooth and the screw fixes the position?

Also has anyone sourced any HH pick-guards - i like the black, but wonder if it's all a little too black - maybe a black tortoise shell would jazz it up a bit.

Daevid - that's an interesting schematic, I didn't think that would work. don't see why you couldn't adapt it to work on HH. You could either use the strangle switch (if you decide you aint interested in strangling!) or both pots. Just cos those pots are for the lead circuit doesn't mean anything in this case, as you're using the switches independent of the vol + tone controls. Again, I'm just saying this off the top of my head tho, will have to check.

Mr Arkadin - I just bought a regular jag pickguard and hack-sawed and filed the pickup holes out. It's a bit rough round the edges (but the pickup rings hide that), and there's an extra screw hole above the neck pup but it does the job and looks ok.

Pedro - You could always cut off a screw and glue that in the spare hole for cosmetics.

I'm thinking now about going for the two push pulls (they sell the 1 Meg Audio taper push pulls on Guitarpartsresource in the US)... from looking at the wiring the Jaguar HH has the same configuration as that on the Seymour Duncan schematic.

It's just a question now of working out how to fit the pickups so i get the splitting but keep the original circuits?

Thinking about it i could wire the two sets of coils to the two push pulls, then wire from the push pulls to the original switch selector areas that the original pickups were connected directly to...

Exacta-mundo. Good plan, I like the sound of it. Sticking a cut-off screw in the spare hole is an interesting idea as well, hadn't thought of that. TBH the hole is partially covered by the pickup ring anyway so it hardly shows, and doesn't bother me at all!

Scratch that. The plan (as advised by people more versed in the art of splitting coils) is to send the "hot" wire (Black by SD standards) to the circuit (lead selector), the Ground (green) is soldered on the volume pot casing and the Red and White go to the Push Pull switch (centre lug) and that is grounded through the bottom lug...

Repeat those steps for the push pull on the tone pot and the Rhythm circuit...

That means i can use the Jag circuits as designed but in single or bucker mode 😁

Well I finally got round to doing coil split sound clips - links above to megaupload.com, which I eventually figured out how to use. Yes I'm slightly out of tune and the playing isn't very fancy but you can get the general idea 😉

Actual sound quality is lousy on both - blame my cheap laptop. Dunno where the interference is coming from. But anyway, the first one is thru my amp, bridge pickup as single coil, then humbucker, then back to single.

Second clip same pup but DI'd, all the riffs are humbucker first then single coil.

I wanna split the neck too but it's quite difficult to do and I might kill the stock pickup. Not really prepared to fork out for a new 4 wire pup, as the tone from that one is fine.

How are you getting on with the new jag anyway Daevid?
