Greetings from a new member, w/ a new Mustang mod!

Greetings. I'm a long time Mustang lover, and new owner of a 65 RI. Had some mods done that I'm very happy with - lost the on/off/phase switches in favor of a concentric vol/tone pot and 3-way toggle. Also swapped the bridge pup for a JB Jr., something I see ALOT of folks here are doing! Anyways, just thought I'd say hello, and share some pics...

Thanks! The holes don't bother me, sort of a nod to the original. There's black tape under there, they aren't just open holes... Still, might have a custom guard made one day - I see from the board that Augustus is the go to man.

Yeah, I wouldn't have thaught it would be a difficult job, it's just a mustang guard without the switch holes. Aug will give you a decent price, more decent than any luthier or tech you'll find outside of the board.

im reptty sure aug quit, you can ask him but im pretty sure he quit. if you have a router i could tell you how.

he started to do a "how to" once on them at the shortsdcale but never finished, kinda like my neck thread.

anywho, its good to see you aboard.

you gota any other shortscalers? perhaps a vintage jaguar of some sort?

Years ago I had a '65 Duo Sonic, one of the really short scale ones. Sounded so beautiful, but never played in tune. I played my friend's vintage '65 stang one day, and fell in love. I picked up this RI a couple months ago, and I like it a lot. Still lookin' for a vintage one though - the RI's are real nice guitars, but vintage (60's) Fenders just have that vibe...

Thanks - that's my feeling too, whenever possible, do mods that can be easily undone! I'm not quite done with this guitar - I'm gonna lock down the trem, and replace the neck pup w/ something a little sweeter than the stock one. Then, for me, it'll be pretty close to perfect!

Well, I locked the trem down, and added a Dimarzio Virtual Vintage in the neck pos, but - the sweetest mod so far - I swapped the neck out for a '65 A width neck I scored on Ebay (and added the locking Klusons). NOW we're talkin'!

That reminds me of an old joke, about the museum that has an axe originally owned by Abe Lincoln (or was it George Washington), totally authentic, except the blade and handle had to be replaced!

Hey, I just wanted to weigh in also. I like your mods, man! I especially like the old neck. Doesn't the feel of an old Fender neck just feel right? I had a '57 Duo Sonic (another with the short scale), and the V-shape and feel of the nitro just made me love it. Mine also didn't play in tune, so I got frustrated and got rid of it (something I regret to this day) for a $300 Ibanez acoustic. Talk about the blunder of my life.... Anyways, the toggle rocks! The only thing I'd do different is keep the original switches in the holes so it looks stock, but that's just me. I hope you keep that 'Stang until it has no more songs left to play in it!!!

Thanks!!! Yeah, I thought about leaving the switches, but they actually cut into my hand sometimes. Since this is a player, I'm going with function over form, though I may one day get a new pickguard made for it... Thanks again!
