it's a spring platform (like a cylinder) that is put into a route in the body, just underneath the bridge. the mute plate has a screw threaded through it. and when you flip the mute, the screw pushes itself across the top of the cylinder, forcing the cylinder down on the spring, so the angle motion of the screw forces the lift platform down. the upward force of this lift platform makes the two flip positions possible
