spaceghost yes, you have to take the strings off. probably the pickguard, too, but I don't have a 'Stang.
LIFE You'll atleast have to remove them from the tuners, but you can leave them on the bridge end. It'd be better to just change the strings though, when you restring it the old strings will sound dead, and probably wont hold tune very well.
