Jaguar / Deluxe - which overdrive?

I play my mid-90's Japanese Jag through a '65 Deluxe reissue. However, I have to to turn it up unfeasibly loud to get the kind of sharp, edgy distortion I want. In an ideal world I would have the electric guitar sound from 'visions of johanna' - my band plays twangy, tight music and the guitar has to have plenty of bite. When we recorded our last record I used the gain channel on a blues deville which came out a bit cold - you can hear 'Tule Lake' at myspace.com/itsthemules.

Can anyone recommend a pedal to accomplish this? the key factors being clarity, bite and dirt.

I'd recommend trying a Proco RAT. I had a RAT2 and sold it on because I found it too edgy and couldn't tame it! At low gain and high filter it had an amazing scratchy sort of tone that was still clear enough to pick out chords amongst the chaos. Generally the range of the gain and eq's of the pedal was massive, but very hard to find sweet spots. Other than I don't really know what to suggest.

To be fair though I haven't tried one with a Fender amp so wouldn't know how it'd mix.

i played an American Telecaster through my 90's Fender Blues Deville in the drive channel and got all the break-up and easygoing distortion i wanted. when i bought the Jaguar i figured i wouldn't get this with the amplifier alone, so I got an Ibanez Tube Screamer and it works perfect. It accents the natural Jag tone, and it's not too overbearing like some some distortion pedals, and best of all it stays constant with the volume level of the Fender amp.

Never used the v-twin, but I have the Mesa Boogie Bottle Rocket. It's got 2 12AX7 tubes housed in it, and it's the most versatile distortion/overdrive pedal i've ever used. heard good things about the v-twin, though, i say try em all.

I'd say the fulldrive was overpriced, I used to have one and my nobels ODR-1 does the same job for a sixth of the price. Edgy distortion you say? RAT I hear. Listen to daydream nation, Lee ranaldo was using a deluxe with a turbo rat at that point. Rats work very well with fender amps.
