jaguar pickup question

I know I should probably know the answer to this already, but whatever, will regular strat pickups fit in the jaguar pickup covers?

I can't say for sure, but I'm fairly sure that they will. You'll probably have to lose the claws though.

well before I head into that territory, what are your opinions on the seymour duncan SJAG-3 Quarter Pound pickups?

I heard a bridge version of the s-jag-3, didnt sound anything like a jag but had balls. I used to have a set of s-jag-2s in my jaguar before I sold it, were pretty powerful, about the same as texas special strat pickups but still retaining a fairly good jag sound (though not quite as sharp). Depends what kinda music you play? I'd defo get jag replacement pickups before putting strat ones in though, theres plenty of variety.

Thanks guys. One more question and I'll shutup. Since the pole pieces in the SJAG 3 are larger than normal jag pickups will that stop the covers from fitting over them?

yes. they will be inside the cover, if you get me?This doenst affect the sound though don't worry.

well maybe you could help me a little more, since you seem to have some experience with these, I'm trying to get close to a tele sound without buying a tele. Which of the three duncan replacements do you think would get me closest? If none of them will then I might just go for some rio grandes (muy grande and stelly), but those are soooo expensive!

Get out the router, or call a Tech, fit one ofthese and get a tele pickup. Would look seriously cool!

That tele plate would look cool, though if you're after vintage jag looks then might not be for you. The quater pounder will not sound teleish, infact the vintage styled S-Jag 1 would probably give you the most twang. But that said, getting a jaguar to sound remotely clost to a tele is difficult, the short scale neck and lack of string-thru-body action gives a definite fender sound but would lack a lot of the twang, sustain and bite a tele bridge pickup would have. If you want to use a jag in a sort of modern contect, playing some hot stuff some clean stuff, the s-jag 2 are the way to go, all out beef is the s-jag 3s. If you're after none of these then another pickup/trade in your jag for a tele. Rio grandes sound immense but are a very expensive option! Would a tele pickup concievably fit a jag anyone?

Strat pups will fit in the covers but if the base is triangular you cannot fit the claw.

*Edit; you will have to chisel away some of the body timber as well to accomodate the triangular shape.

The SD replacement pup pole pieces will line up okay but wont snuggly fit into the holes, just slightly underneath.

Tut- tut stevie. You aint gonna get a Tele sound with teh Jag. The bridge plate on a Tele is the main contribution to its sound...

I'm just not a fan of the way teles look, aside from the fact that living in texas everyone and their mom has one (as well as a stratocaster and les paul), but I do love the way they sound. That's sort of why the rio grande stelly caught my eye, it's a telecaster pickup designed for a stratocaster, but whatever. I'm gonna save up and put some SD antiquity's in my jag and then maybe mortgage my house and buy a custom shop tele....maybe.

I'm in agreement with you. I love the gritty Tele sound but i'm not keen on how it looks either.

I suppose the most economical solution would be to buy a Jagmaster, remove the trem and fit a Tele plate/pup. It would have to be top loading with the strings though, unless you filled the old trem cavity with wood to enable making it string through. hmmm.... might do this myself when i have some spare money.

heheh, i've bust the budget for this year already Bob. Two Jags, various pedals. I've also funded me joining a Sex Pistols tribute band which meant me buying a cream Tokai Les Paul, leather trousers 😲 , "destroy" shirts and all that malarky... oh, dont forget the white handkerchief for the head as well. 😛

The Tokai is very good for under 200 quid second hand. It was the closest decent quality guitar i could get to steve jones' LP for a good price.

this is my first post. I just discovered this forum so i'm sorry if this has been asked before but i'm also thinking of changing the pickups in my jaguar to Seymour Duncan SJAG-2s but i've recently found more expensive pickups - Seymour Duncan Antiquity II for Jaguars. Does anybody know anything about the antiquity pickups?
