Feedback Help - Jaguar

Hello one and all,

Bought myself a japan made jaguar 2 weeks ago and absolutely love it to bits. Already replaced the #### fender supplied bridge with a mustang one as I play far too hard with heavy gauge strings and hate random bits falling off my guitar. Deffinately the best mod you can do to it, for people in the UK Allparts are an absolute bitch to deal with so I recommed.....Axesrus (just google it). Their prices are very good and they ship next day and for free! You cannot lose!

Now to my main issue

The dreaded FEEDBACK

Here is my setup

Fender Jap Reissue Jag - (obviously)

played through

Line 6 Spider 2 - 120watt

I Like a nice trebly sound with a fair amount of distortion

I use my setup live and need it too be quite loud

For the controls on my guitar I have

rythm circuit - off

lead cicuit - on

neck pickup - off

bridge pickup - on

bass cut - one

No matter how much i fiddle with my amp and guitar settings I cannot get the level of distortion and volume i want without the very loud annoying ring.....

Please could you suggest some options for me?

Buy a new pickup for the neck position???????

Rewire the pickups somehow??????

Wax pot the pickups????

I don't know..... ☹

and my ears hurt

My friend is having the exact same problem. Jap Jag, high pitch squeeling.

He is getting the pickups re-waxed. I don't know if this will help, but I'll keep you posted.

Otherwise I suggest you buy some seymour duncan jaguar pickups.

Wax pot the whole pick up. You probably won't be doing this yourself, but if you live in a city you'll probably be able to find a tech who will.

either that or get seymour duncan replacements, which will possibly sound better, but if you like the stock sound then waxing your pickups would be best way to go.

So Im considering either

1. Wax potting both pickups

2. Buying SJAG-3 pickup

( Should I buy 1 for the bridge or 2 for both bridge and neck?)

Which option would reduce the feedback most?

Ideally I'd like it to be gone all together

Roughly how much would it cost to wax pot my pickups?

Is this a permenant mod? Will i need to get it done again?

I'm leaning towards wax potting as it probably be cheaper and I am a very skint student....

I'd say spash out on a decent Seymour Duncan pickup for the bridge position (since it looks like thats all you use)- they really are a step up from the stock units.

And of course you can sell the stock pickup on eBay for a bit of cash too, so you can at least make some of your money back.

!UPDATE!

I got the pickups wax potted

and

*drum roll*

it has made almost no difference whatsoever

I have even changed my gain levels and everything

I am not happy

after doing more research i have cocluded that

i need to buy a

SJAG-3 Quarter Pound Jaguar pickup

uggh yet more money down the pan

I can sympathize with you a bit on this as I occasionally get a similar problem, but only occasionally. I use a rat pedal in some songs when rehearsing with my band and if the amp settings are too trebly it squeals at high volume. The only way to stop it is change the settings or switch the pedal off, and maybe importantly to you, it did it with my standard (waxed) jap pickup, and it still does it with the seymour duncan I replaced it with. I'm using humbuckers tho so it might be different for you, but be warned anyway.

Have you tried playing with the pup height to see if that makes any difference? It probably won't but best to eliminate all the free options before spending cash!

the jaguar is such a nice guitar

just spoils it totally

ive had the guitar setup professionally and the tech adjusted the height of the pickups in an attempt to stop the feedback but that hasnt helped

I've been looking into stacked humbuckers

the best looking one i can find is the

Dimarzio HS-2

it looks ideal as it has the same tones as i use (high treble and low bass)

its a strat pickup though and i dont know how easy it would be to install/work...(will i have to reroute etc?)

anyone had any experience with a similar or same pickup

also

does the wiring affect feedback?

or is it souly the pickups fault?

If you are playing close to your amp with the volume high you will get feedback with any pickup, especially single coils. The Jags pickups where not designed for that situation.

It seems to me you now have two choices:

1/ Upgrade the pickups (to high gain singles with the sound of things)..

2/ Play through a multi FX processor that has a built in 'gate'.

I sometimes use a Korg 'toneworks' and get no feedback problems with any guitars.

they seem the answer

I have spoken to various guitar techs and another jaguar fanatic that has installed one and they seem the best option by far

I'm getting one for the bridge position

thats for sure

but

will the neck position one still feedback if its off?

just about to order a new model shr-1 and i'm excited about being able to play my jag loud for once without worrying about feedback!

UPDATE

I now have my perfect guitar

after replacing the awful jaguar bridge with a mustang one

and replacing the stock bridge pickup with a seymour duncan shr-1 hotrails

NO MORE (microphonic) FEEDBACK

I could not be happier

hello all... glad to have found this forum and thread!

i'm gettin the same seriously bad and high pitch feedback, but i have a japanese reissue jazzmaster - still recommend the hot HOT RAILS for that??

i'm not very techy, no idea what differing pickup models are suppose to do but i guess i want one that keeps the sound as authentic as possible. reducing the treble slightly is probably the most critical thing (no doubt the answer is reducing the tone control here).

anyways i use the jazzmaster in quite versatile settings. full on heavy rock to disco! nearly always have it all in the bass pickup.

sorry if this has been covered in another thread but i couldnt find it.
