Jaguar HH DRAGSTER pickups

Has anyone else been dissapointed in the Jaguar HH's Dragster pickups? I just bought one and it sounded decent in the store, but when I used it at home and compared it to my other guitars I was greatly dissapointed. Even to an Epi les paul it sounds weak and has very little bass out of the bridge. My other guitars have hot rails, pearly gates, JBs. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to replace the pickups in this one. They don't sound too far from single coils. And they hum on overdrive. Lots!!! Is anyone else having this problem?

I haven't had a problem with humming from mine, but I wasn't too keen on the tone, especially of the bridge pup. I replaced it with a 4 wire seymour dunc so I can split the coils. Still don't love the sound tho. That said, I like the tone in the neck position and the rhythm circuit has a nice jazzy quality thru a good clean amp.

to be honest my HH jag mainly lives in it's gig bag these days (it falls out of the stand 🙄 ) - my squier strat is nicer to play and sounds better. Might sell the HH if I don't start using it again

The Dragsters are OK - nothing special, but i am seriously thinking of upgrading to Bare Knuckle Crawlers. BKs are great anyway and the Crawlers were designed to be good in LPs and Strats, so it should retain a certain Fender sound in a Humbucker. Unfortunately with the

When i purchased my HH the previous owner was so disappointed with the Dragsters he fitted DiM singles (HS3 and YJM: malmsteens spec). But he gave me all the stock parts as well, so i put it back to HH and i thought the Dragsters were toneless and weak.

So i changed it back but used my old red tort scratchplate off another Jag.

Cobainer- the Jag is never gonna sound like a LP anyway, it does'nt have the set neck and mass of mahogany for starters.

What kind of sound are you looking for?

I love making fine vintage handwound pickups and make many styles of pickups as well as jazzmaster and Jaguar style pickups to vintage and custom specs. Right now I am not in the business yet, it is more of a passion but I have already made hundreds of pickups and have my own precision winders and am fully stocked with flatwork and magnets etc.

On second thought I realized it sounds like you just need a nice set of Humbuckers that will fit your guitar. I wasn't familiar with the "Dragster" style pickups. Unfortunately, humbuckers are labor intensive and good ones are typically hard to get without laying out quite a bit of money.

One way might be to have the dragsters rewound by hand (machine wounds typically sound thin) and have someone put in a nice Alnico II or V magnet in them when they are apart for rewinding(depending on the attack characteristics you want). Since the actual parts to build up a humbucker are a good part of the cost a rewind might help save some $$.

I'm a new owner of a Jaguar HH (the model with the tremolo). This is absolutely the best sounding guitar I've ever owned. My rig involves using a POD XT through a Johnson Power Station amp. I use different flavors of a VOX AC30 sample, and they all sound pretty sweet.

This guitar has really inspired me to become more proficient at soloing. At the same time, I can easily switch into a controllable feedback frenzy and just let it wail.

I really doubt that I'd ever change these pickups.

I actually was not a fan of the Jaguar HH Special's pickups either, too decieving to me, the main problem is they are not wound that hot (7.16K....my JAZZMASTER is more powerful and hotter and it has single coils). Another reason they don't sound like humbuckers is because they are also on 1meg pots, which I was not used to at the time.

I sold mine for a 1966 Fender Mustang that had been restored, it was like having the same guitar in a smaller size with the luxury of phase switching, plus I had wanted a mustang for awhile, and I already have a Jaguar that I'm still quite crazy about.

you could maybe get Novak to make a pair of these pickups to fit your guitar, no routing required, and they fit under a dog-ear P-90 cover.
