What replacement Jaguar pickups for Joy Division sound?

One of my favourite ever guitar tones is that on Shadowplay by Joy Division, above.

I need to replace the pickups in my jaguar, as theyre the default Japanese non-wax potted feedbacking ones.

I guess Id firstly need more sustain, more bite and more crunch. Ive tried to get this tone with my other guitar, a basic shop bought Epiphone Gibson copy, and I can get pretty close, but nothing comes close to the ROAR of Bernies guitar.

Can you please recommend what Id get to best recreate this tone on my Japanese Jag.

It's quite a desirable sound. Bernard sumner has never been credited for his awesome guitar playing.

I'm 99% sure he used a Westbury LP Junior-a-like guitar in the JD years, and they originally came with seymour duncan super distortions. In fact the Westbury's were underated guitars.

So your gonna be pushed to get that sound with a Jag, quite simply because of the build, the tonewood and humbuckers. He had a very warm sound, something the Jag doesnt have. If you are hellbent on achieving it with your Jag i'd look at modelling FX and EQ with your current pickups.

Other than that consider a decent S.G. by Tokai, Gibson, Epi, etc.

I actually have a gibson epiphone cheap guitar, whatever they're called, and can get some good tones with that already.

I reckon the Quarter Pounder Seymour Duncan's might be alright, they are the most heavy pickups they give.

Essentially I want to be able to play the cure and also joy division. Those are my two sound benchmarks.

Amp with I got a Tech21 Trademark 120, it's 120 watts, 3 channels, 3 amp models - marshall, fender and mesa + I've also got a Line 6 pod so I'm doing ok on that front.

There's just something about the Bernie tone that I can't replicate, It's the GRRness it's got.

He rolled his tone back quite a lot on the bridge pup, try that.

He used some humbucker equippped guitars so, you might try to replace those in althought I really dont see a point.

In my last band I used to get a Joy Divisionish sound from my Jap Jaguar through a Marshall JCM900. I wasn't really going for that exactly but it always reminded me of it. Kind of clangy and cutting. I used to use the bridge pickup with not too much gain. It's as much to do with what you play as how the guitar sounds though.

He uses Shergolds. Live, he still gets a good sound from his ES335. It appears the humbuckers are the key.

That tone to me sounds like every other marshall with humbucker guitar plugged into it sound.

No I like the song, and really like about 6-7 joy division songs, but the recording quality was poop.
