So I have 2 jaguars. I bought the second one (CIJ) with the idea in mind to do more risky modifications with it, such as route for humbuckers, and leave the first stock (AVRI).
With that in mind, I ordered a Dimarzio PAF for the neck and a Dimarzio Super Distortion for the bridge of the CIJ. I also ordered a second pickguard, just for the routing. Of course, these are full sized humbuckers because, to my knowledge, Dimarzio doesnt make the single coil-sized versions. The plan was/is to route the body/pickguard for these humbuckers on the cheaper CIJ jaguar.
Unfortunately, the tech I took it to was leary of doing the routing because he felt the guitar would lose too much tone by the loss of wood during routing. I am not allergic to single-coil sized humbuckers, and I guess I may consider ordering a pair of some SD's to go in it instead, but I also dont want to eat the cost of the full-sized humbuckers. I dont want to mess with returns, as I bought them on ebay; I could probably find another guitar to put them in if I did go the SD SC sized route. I should also point out that I'm not worried about resale value; I am keeping this guitar for life.
What do you think, is the tech too paranoid about routing the body? Would the guitar lose too much tone? Or, should I take it to someone else willing to do the route? I really had my heart set on the Dimarzio's, but I am still weighing the pros and cons at this point.
