Newbie + how to tell my model of Mustang

Hi everyone. I've been playing guitar most of my life but I've only just got my first Mustang. I must give credit to the Cyclone and Cyclone II I have owned for giving me the courage to try the Mustang.

Anywho, how do I tell whether mine is a 65 or a 69 re-issue? It has no contours and no racing stripes and is amazingly light. Any ideas???

did you buy it new or used?

if its from the mid 90's(you will be able to tell by the color, guard combo and the neck should be stamped) then its technicalled a 65 re-issue from the 90s. if you bought new or relatively new then its the newer version of the 65 re-issue you can also tell this by the color guard combo and if it has plastic buttons on it. i don;t believe there are any stamps on the newest ones tho.

there are a few cosmetic differences, but the biggest and most noticable is the pickguard. If your pg fits perfectly, then it's just a reissue, if it looks like it has shrunk, then it's the 65 RI. besides, doesn't the 69 have contours?

the 69 re-isse of the 90s(or what they called a 69 at the time) did not have contours and was exactly like a 65 that we have now except with different guards, colors, normal kluson style tuners and no copper shielding, or maybe it was called a 66 re-issue,

but mattis is probly right, its a 1942 original!
