That's because on a regular Mustang, the switch is a "phase reversal switch", which reverses the phase of the pickup by reversing the connections on the pickup. It's audible when one pickup has it's connections swapped around and the other is going as normal, it also works for cancelling out hum and noice in some wiring situations.
A pickup selector, on the other hand, just chooses amongst 3-5 different selections using the hot wires to each pickup, and connecting them in parallel to the same output wire to the volume control/output jack.
It's all a lot like plumbing actually................
Jack - the tap
volume/tone controls - faucet knobs
switches - faucets that are only all the way on or all the way off
capacitors - a buncha little Brita filters that take out the iron of Bass or the glass shards of treble
Another difference here is I have EMG pickups. EMG pickups use batteries (red wire), and the ground is almost as important as watching cartoons, and does'nt work for phase reversal, at least, not until recently.
