pickup claw

Having had a japanese fender jag for a few months now I finally replaced both the pickups for SD quarter pounder for neck & bridge, whiilst Im happy with the overall tone of the guitar its still wailing with microphonic style feedback when played at a decent volume.

I read on this forum that removing the claws that surround the pickups helps with this problem, I just wanted to check if anybody else agrees with this or not?

I realise that by doing this it will likely alter the sound somewhat, also, by removing the claw I will presumably have to add padding under the pickup to keep it at a reasonable height, what material should be used for this?

I have heard that yes removing the pickup claw will remove some of this feedback, but I heard it doesnt really change the tone.

these pickups, whith both going at the same time, should cancel all hum. they do on my mustang with both switches forward. im not sure which of the 17 switches makes it do that on a jag though

with one off and the other one on sure they are going to feedback, they are singlecoil pickups. big gnarly ones to boot.

i thought they came wax potted, mine certainly looked/felt like they were and it said they were when i got them

think il just leave the claws on now tho, its definately better with both pickups on at the same time but it still squeels a bit, i noticed it says on the Seymour Duncan website that the sjag3 does not use a cover, im not sure what this means, surely removing the white plastic pickup cover wouldnt make much difference to the sound, i dont know tho...

the sjag 3's are not designed to have a cover. that is the cover is already designed into the pickup when you get it so the wind isn't exposed. i still cover mine again with mustang pickups. it makes the covers bow out at the bottom underneath the pickguard but thats about it

Pot the whole pickup assembly including the cover and claw. Don't worry about losing tone, the SJAG3 has none. 😛

i've read that the claw increases the magnetic field and output. does this apply to any pickup it's installed with?

it doesn't increase it. it probably changes the field lines. that may affect the sound noticeably (but it may not). if it does then it would affect the sound of any pickup in it. i think the difference in sound would be small.

cool. i'll try it just for sh!ts and giggles. the claws are only $7 or so. i got the info that it makes the output hotter out of the jaguar faq posted at the top of the thread, btw.
