As promised, a guide to refinishing.
Prep:
Remove as much paint as possible with a paint remover, and then sand with 220 dry, then 320 dry sandpaper.
Fill with oil based grain filler:
Wipe across the grain with a cloth, after ten or twenty minutes, wipe off excess with mineral spirits, after an hour, repeat and leave to dry overnight.
Sand remaining filler with 220, use a toothpick to open up the screw holes.
Brush on "sand and sealer", leave for an hour, apply second coat, leave over night, sand with 220 to remove shiny spots.
When flat and matte, apply third coat, leave an hour, apply fourth coat, leave overnight.
Resand with 220 then 320, REMOVE ALL SHINY SPOTS.
Reopen screw holes.
Priming:
Use a white shellac primer.
Apply two coats, when dry, sand with 320 then respray and sand again.
If smooth move onto colour coat.
Colour coat:
Spray until the white has gone, then add three more coats to make sure.
If it runs, stop, let it dry, then sand out with 600wet.
If smooth, move onto clear coat. If not use 600/800wet.
Clear coat:
Spray three passes, that's a coat, allow each coat to dry for at least three hours, spray no more than three coats a day for at least three days.
Polishing:
Sand with 400,600,800,1000,1200,1500 and 2000wet in that order (leave paper to soak overnight in water).
Using a swirl removing polishing compound and soft cotton rag shaped into a ball, polish until sweet.
