the only reason that they would have used an extra coat of paint on that guitar to make the faux burst would be that the wood is crap to begin with,
its probly scraps off of the floor, and your right cbs did not make everything crap right away but i can sure garentee you that the quility did not go up at all.
back then the jazzmaster and jaguar were the top of the line guitar and they were using a solid burst to cover up nasty wood. that sounds to me like cbs right off the bat started cutting corners, wouldn't you agree?
im with jayson on this, i think if you are going to have a good burst you need to be able to see the wood grain.
