If it was yellow it could have been either a Dod PDS distortion or a Boss OD station, either of them would be a bargain at 25 bucks just on the basis of a resale.
What sound are you after? Bands, artists?
I can tell you now if you want to scoop your mids like 90% of Metal bands you need one with a decent EQ. Its achievable with the Marshall Jackhammer and Boss MT-2.
If you want a grungey distortion i'd try a Big Muff or Rat.
Someone mentioned a Univox Superfuzz in another thread because Mudhoney used one, great, but they are highly collectable and rare so you had better rob your dad and scour ebay for the next 6 months.
MXR Distortion+ are good pedals, but the bypass is bad if you switch to clean sounds regular.
