how do you put in a tune-o-matic bridge in a mustang

are you getting the standard one? With the thin posts? If so, just wrap masking tape around the posts until it snuggly fits into the cup the old bridge sat in. slip it in and intonate. your done

Is that what all you tuneomatic heads do to install an ABR-1?

Doesn't seem very secure to me, sounds dodgy, i suppose i'd have to see it on a guitar in front of me.

i have the nashville posts, and i did that. it works fine. thats what this site says to do to put a TOM on it.

The nashville posts are alot bigger than the ABR-1, so i guess it would be ok with the nashville (well, you say you like yours so it must work). But like, if you did it on an ABR-1, you'd use more than five times the tape of the nashville, that can't be good really.

I think they mean the ABR-1 tune-o-matic when they say the standard, they used to be used on les pauls, but now most les pauls come with the nashville.

This picture will tell you all you need to know about the mounting posts me and the freak have been talking about.

If you absolutely have to have a tune-o-matic, go with the nashville. It'll be less fitting time, less tape around the posts which must be good, and because of the chunky posts, it'll be better for heavier string gauges and down tuning.

Imagine if you tried to install the ABR-1, the choices you'd have is to wrap tape around the posts until they fit in the original slot (which would be a lot of tape and i don't think it would be very good), or you have to modify the original post holes by filling them with wood and then drilling the holes to accommodate them.

When I added a tune-o-matic to my Stang, I bought 3 Gotoh's off Stew Mac. As they were cheap and worked well.

As for size, They are (or at least look) bigger than other TOM's. The ABR-1 is thin as its meant to be at an angle. A bridge like that wont work well with a Stang. I know this because I bought a Gibson ABR-1 second hand from my old tech. I tried adding little pieces of wood, and then the tape so the bridge would sit at an angle. It worked, but wasn't solid.

Heres the link for the Gotoh's. These should be the ones used, imo, as they worked for a destruction guitarist and for their size.

Just stick it on & play it, if it sounds & feels ok, then go with it.

There is a lot of talk about putting a tuneomatic bridge on a mustang, the main thing being the neck radius issues, but if you stick it on & it works, you are the winner, what the hell ! Try it.
