Slash the speaker cone on your amp, plug in a DS-1 and make sure your guitar is out of tune. That'll get you close to the 'Incesticide' sound.

i was told in store that the ds-1 and I presume the 2 are really gain pedals rather than distortions, the md-2 is what generates distortion, unless it really doesn't matter.

Well, the ds-1 is a gain pedal kurt used, he later changed to an md-2 distortion pedal.

They are very popular models although ive only briefly tried them so I can't give an opinion on the quality.

These threads kill me. Kurdtz DS-1 was modified for starters and secondly he used a mesa boogie stack plus whatever else, heavy gauge strings also contributed to his sound.

That would suggest you wont get his sound in one pedal. BUT, his sound from a tone snob point of view was a bit whank.. something similar could be achieved using a $10 Roktek Distortion in some people opinions.

To my ears, his 'in utero' tone (which, I'd like to add, I love) has more bottom end and girth than a ds-2 is capable of delivering, with less fizziness. However, I really, really don't think it matters. I imagine the vintage fender twin and the custom wired/humbuckered vintage jaguar had more to do with his tone, any 'distortion' pedal would be just as good. I prefer, infinitely, the sound of my blues driver with max gain to my brothers ds-2 at about 2:30 on the gain (the blues driver has big, hairy balls, listen to carrie brownstein's work on the sleater kinney album 'the woods', its on a lot.). Case in point: one of my favorite bands of all time, oceansize, use marshall jackhammers, big muffs and boss mega distortions (all less than

sorry, forgot to answer. I imagine the keeley mod would get you a better overall tone with more bottom, the specifics of kurts pedal I imagine has been lost over time

Oh and the boss sd-1 is a great pedal, in my opinion, not all that heavy but if you're using humbuckers its a great pedal, will cover a lot of tumescreamer terratory as well as the heavier stuff in a cheap pedal. If you want to splash out on a great all rounder though, I recommend one from a company called blackstar i've got the 'drive' model and its great, amazing even, I had to think hard about not using it when I got my new mesa combo. It was THAT good. Now my bassist uses it and its lethal.

i thought his was stock, but who cares. the in utero sounds more bassy becuase he used the tech 21 amp simulator pedal as his main distortion.

wow, there's been so many threads on this exact same subject.

What you want is a tube amp with a lot of natural clipping at low volumes, like a marshall or mesa boogie. Then you want to plug your pedals in front of this to give the drive channels of the amp even more of a push. Hot pickups, mustang and jag shortscale necks and alder woods will give you his sound; analog chorus pedals after your gain pedals in your signal chain.

In recordings he used a lot of different amps, guitars, and effects so don't worry too much about getting all of his sounds out of one rig, it just won't happen.
