i desided to find a way to give myself more control with my fingers without mindlessly playing scales all day so i found this little gem. plus i find i get frustrated trying to apply the scales to other things... so i wanted something that was only to serve a purpose and couldnt be applied to anything. hahaha ah.. to be self-taught and naive..
basicly, if you have any trouble with any lazy fingers, or theres a spot on the neck you dont feel comfortable on. just take any particular four consecutive frets in that area, and use these little patterns. the numbers are your fingers. (i.e. 1=pointer; 2=middle; 3=ring; four=pinky)
E:1234 and like i said, the numbers are your fingers, not frets.
a:1243 an example of the frets would be 3-4-5-6 OR 10-11-12-13.
d:1324 and you'd use each of those same frets on each string, repectively.
g:1342 more or less, its simple combinations. you might also wanna
b:1423 try different picking techniques while you're at it.
e:1432
so, if say you have troubles with your ring finger, like i do. i've found that by starting on each string with the finger you have trouble with demands more of it. so, you might try combinations like:
E:3124
a:3142
d:3214
g:3241
b:3412
e:3421
and it'd prolly be benificial to try 'em starting on the low e, then once you feel comfortable, starting on the high e, just because its got a different feel to it. i'd tab it out, but i think this it pretty self-explanitory, and lets face it, i'm lazy. ha. plus i dont wanna tell you what frets to use, because i'm not you, i dont know where your problem areas are. but i'll tab it out if this isn't making sence to anyone.
and i know its not the most advanced or very amazing advice, but i'll just help you get a more comfortable feel all over the neck, and get your fingers working. also, since your using the same four frets on each string, you dont need to memorize anything, just look at the list and play whats there.. you shouldnt really have to look at your hand, because there's virtually no hand movement going on, just telling you which of your fingers to use. and once you feel like you've gotten the feel of it, try switching up the combos, and just reading the list as you go. it's pretty easy to make your own.
and again, like i said, if your an advanced player, this might not be of any use. because quite frankly if your considered advanced, you should have control over all your fingers by now. so.. 😛
i think i explained it pretty well, but if theres anything thats not clear, feel more than free to ask. i could be taking for granted that i already know what i'm trying to explain. sorry if anything was a bit redundent, i was just trying to paint a clear picture.
happy jams, all!
