Ok, remebering that I know nothing about theory, I will try to explain this as best I can, and maybe someone can tell me what it is I'm doing.
I was mucking around playing chords tonight, and trying to make some interesting sounds. Playing basic open chords on basic open tuning, I found that using my lowest fretting finger and playing it one fret higher created a wonderful, eerie, 'horror movie soundtrack' kind of chord.

And so on.
Sounded good with all open major chords, but I didn't try it with any others.
