A lot of that will just be to do with poor frequency response. Your phone has a microphone in it, but a very small and #### one. When it comes to accurately reproducing sounds you dont have much chance, and it gets worse with distance. It's not really a design fault, the microphone doesnt need to be any better than it is for using it as a phone.
When you say dark, what I assume you mean is that it lacks treble frequencies and probably a little clarity. That's all to do with what I said above. The answer is to use a better quality mic.
