I need to partially refret a 67 mustang neck.

How would i find out what size frets exactly the neck has?

or does fender just do one size of vintage?

I was looking on allparts UK and they have all kinds of different sizes of small fretwire in the general section but only one size under fender vintage.

I'm not being funny man, but you've asked questions before that lead me to think that you are a novice at guitar repairs, do you realise what's involved in refretting guitars?

well i wasnt planning on doing it myself, just finding the parts myself to save money, but i guess it doesnt matter since i was talking with the tech the other day and decided to have the whole neck striped, have the radius reduced and have medium jumbos put on.

I know i'm spending stupid amounts on this jag project but its a fun adventure and every guitarist can tell a long story about how much they've blown on kit.

Generally I wouldnt attempt any repairs unless is changing a part like tuners or a pickguard or something like.

what radius are you giving it?

its tricky to partial refret anything especially old fender necks cuz the frets were shot in from the side, not the top. meaning that when you lift the fret out, you are pretty much garneteed to rip the fretboard up more than normal.

yeah he said that they were side loaded when i mentioned it was a 67, but hes happy to do a total refret more than a partial and i like bigger frets anyway.

as for the radius i forget, i only realised what radius meant that day, the same one they use on epiphones and the like i think.

generally i think epiphone uses 12, and some gibsons are 14, most tune o matics are 12.

what are you gonna do about the bridge tho?

jaguar bridge? or tune o matic?

already got a mustang bridge, which now you mention it won't match the radius exactly if its changed, how much of an issue is that?

the larger the radius the less curve there is. so the mustang, has a 7 and a quarter ot half, so the E's will be really low and the A/B will be slightly higher and the D/G will be higher. depending on the radius change the lower action strings could be too low and cause buzz. id recomend finding a bridge that would go with the radius that is interchangeable with a normal mustang bridge, if its epiphone-esque, id highly suggest a TOM

you would be a perfect candidate for the jaguar bridge as well, depending on the chosen radius, if you went for something like a 9.5(most common new style fenders) or a 10, or really flat like a jackson(16) then the jag bridge would slip right in, and you could essentially set each string up perfectly to the radius.

Well i guess its no biggie if i leave the radius, the bigger frets are more important.

I'm just used to my les pauls flater board so adapting to something new should be good.

I could use a jag bridge but i didnt get the mustang bridge for nothing and TOMs cause problems with the trem arm don't they?

the tom and trem can work togeyther well but you would want a teck to slot them and put graphite in the slots.

i you use the trem alot then a jaguar/mustang bridge would be ideal.
