Using a mustang neck on a Jag body & Hardware

Can it be done? The scale is the same, but what is the radius of the Mustang neck vs. the Jaguar bridge?

I'm pretty sure they are identical, same scale, radius, nut width etc, the only thing that changes is the heel width depending on what country it was made in.

Does it, then, stand to reason that a 24'' Duosonic II or Musicmaster II neck would also work?

The reason I ask is that I'm assembling a Jag together from various parts, and Jag necks are tough to get on ebay, though duosonic, MM, and stang necks abound. What would be the disadvantages of such a move, if any? The heel width might be an issue, ya? What is standard for american and CIJ jags, as opposed to what I might expect from the aforementioned necks?

ok.. so i just typed a giant thing about jag' and 'stang necks. hit backspace in combination with something and went back a page and lost it all. BUT main points being this:

jaguars & mustang necks are identical, save the width at nut:

Jaguar: Width at Nut - 1.650

Well since you mention you're willing to put basically any neck that will work on Ive just completed such a project.

Japanese necks are 0.9mm wider than american ones at the heel, I don't know of any discrepancies on that.

Indeed duo sonic 2, musicmaster 2 and Bronco necks will work and there are a good few of those on ebay from time to time.

Jagmaster necks will also work but those are as rare as jagstang ones on ebay, only ever seen one.

I will also warn you to consider the condition of the neck, a vintage neck will gain you that 'i've got a vintage part' thing but will be older and so more in need of restoration or closer to the time it will need it, worn frets and nuts and fractures are the big thing to watch for here.

But apart from that they're all the same really, you can fit american necks to jap bodies (ive done it) but it will cost in labour.

This is interesting stuff. In my experience i would say the JS neck is the most comfortable in new condition but a vintage neck at its best is effortless to play. You need to be carefull though like someone said, that you dont buy a vintage neck that has gone by its best.

Sometimes the frets have been stoned several times and sit very low, making bends choke out and it difficult to play. I've had a couple of old Musicmasters and can confirm their necks were excellent.

The likely hood is if you find a vintage neck thats in mint condidtion or at least has nothing up with it it will cost over the odds, a poor condidtion neck can be refurbished but the extra cost will mean it probably matches the good condition for price, it happened to me.

so either;

find a reissue,

buy an expensive vintage

buy a knackered vintage and get it fixed

have one made

that was obvious

there are slight discrepancies with vintage Fender necks and neck pockets, but I've never had a vintage, AVRI, RI, MIM, MIK or MIJ/CIJ *not* fit in a neck pocket. I have, however, found that, sometimes, the neck pocket is slightly larger, but once the neck is bolted on, a quick pull on the neck, towards either the upper horn or lower horn, sets everything straight. *Any* Fender 24" neck will fit in *any* Fender 24" body; with exception to the Supersonics, the Venus and the differences between a Jazzmaster 25.5" and a Strat 25.5". (Not that the jazzy or strat apply to you, btw)

I have one final question, how important is it to get a name brand tremolo system? I see fender bridges and trem tail pieces separately going for $60 and right on up, but I see non name brand deals such as this

Is it really that important not to cheap out, or is this a truly viable economic alternative?

i think the no name brand ones are generally less quality. if you are going to use the trem a lot definitely go for an american one, i hear they are by far the best. i would think if your not going to use the trem much(if at all) a no name one shold be fine.
