Mustang headstocks

Well, what I think is making some Mustaangs alot cooler than others is the matching headstocks. I don't know why, but Mustangs with matching headstocks are one of the best looking guitars I've ever seen. So, if I bought a Mustang without a matching headstock, how hard/how much would it cost to get the headstock the same colour as the body? What is the easiest and cheapest way to do this on?

Well, there's only one way to do it if you're not prepared to do it yourself, and that's take it to a tech.

Shop around, get your phone book out and ask a few for a price and maybe even go to their workshops and meet them before you decide.

if its old it will be hard to match it because of the aging, but if its re issue, shouldnt be too hard.

Nah, I wouldn't paint a vintage one anyway. But what type of paint am I supposed to get? You cannot exactly walk into a store and ask for Lake Placid Blue or Candy Apple Red.

So, if I'll have someone else to do it, what kind of shop am I gonna ask for this in? Just a normal music shop?

And if I'm gonna do it myself I would liked to keep the text on the headstock... Is this hard to do?

you cant refinish anything and keep the OG logo. you can buy a new one and install it though. i dont know of places to get paint besides reranch, thats nitro though, the bodys on re issues are poly, shouldnt be a problem though.

Reranch.com seems to be down... I don't live in the US anyway, but in cold Scandinavia ☹

Decaljoe, however, might be pretty useful in the future. It's pretty expencive for $20 for a sticker, but I guess that's a price I'll just have to pay. Also, I didn't get an answer on what kiind off painting I'm going to use on it.

japanese mustangs have poly on them, places can mix paint that will look the color and then find someone who can paint it. and there not stickers, there water slide, and thats a good price on them, you get two so if you #### one up you have another and there just expensive where ever you get them from

Thanks, but since I don't think I know any who can paint it, I'll think I'll just do it myself, it can't be that hard could it? I'll just use tape all over it except where I will paint. The hardest part will off course be painting around the metal parts on the headstock, which I don't think I will take the chance removing. Do you have anything more to add? Thanks again

you have to take everything off off the head stock before you paint it. its not hard, and sand the clear coat off of the headstock and sand it with fine grade sandpaper to make the painting surface nice, then add decal, then clear coat.

Okay, just got one last question for you: Are these two Mustangs the same except for one of them having a matching headstock? They're both MIJ re-issues...

For me it looks like the latter has a kind of darker, sparklyer colour. Is this just the light or the camera or something, or is the two colors different?

there the same, one could be darker, i didnt look to in depth at them, but one could be lighter for aging if there different years or one could have been in the sun more

no. all he has to do is hit the headstock with 0000 steel wool (if there are no dents/scratches) and shoot the color (lots of thin coats to cover up the existing decal, and no primer, as primer leaves a thin line on the edge of your headstock, which you don't want). He doesn't even have to tape off the entire neck, either; just around the headstock and 4-6 inches up the fretboard (with plenty of ventilation, of course). Then add the waterslide decal and shoot with Deft Gloss laquer, which you can find at any Anawalt Lumber/Home Depot/Lowe's.

register at www.guitarrefinishing.com (reranch forum) and look around...there are always threads about what you are trying to do. Furthermore, go to Geocha, on that site, for your decals.

those decals from decal joe are not stickers.....

they are really really nice waterslide decals, 20 bucks includes 2 decals with custom contour decals, as well as detailed instructions, inside a manilla envelope, inside of another highly padded envelope.

you pay good money for a good product with that guy.

this is the strat decal that i got from him, i also scored a couple jag decals, a couple jazz bass decals.

Since my Mustang has a sunburst--a matching headstock may be odd, but with a solid colour body a matching headstock on any guitar usually looks good. But definitely so on solid colour Mustangs--which the vast majority of them are.
