maybe i'm a bit behind on news.. but i found this it and i didnt see any threads here.

so lazy. yet appealing in a strange "if i became a millionare tomorrow" sorta way? haha says alot about my character. insane though, though. makes me think about what guitars 40 years from now will be like and how i need a vintage jag, sooner than later. haha

Well, it took 50 years to get from the standard tuning system to the Gibson Robotic one, and it's not like they even threw it at the whole range of guitars. That's the only real advancement since the 50's strat.

Just another expensive toy. Although kinda handy for tone-deaf people haha. I dont think serious musitians would want that, plus i heard that it plays worse than an epiphpone.

I saw it at NAMM this year, and took part in the demo. I think it's a great idea for the rich musician who has everything, but the pricetag keeps it from our hands. I'm gonna take the optimistic route here, and say that it may pave the way for better technology down the road. [/shrugs]

btw, I heard Jummy Page was using some system that could change the tuning of his guitar with a push of a button.

That one does, it can change to one of the default tunings.

What i want to know is because the tuners are turned by the mechanism, can you change the tuning manually?

It'd be cool if you had a sonic youth type tuning, pressed a button, and then it remembered your setting so you could go back to it at the push of a button, but i suppose that's the next generation of robotic guitaring.

vg-strat technology maybe? i played one of those vg strats.. pretty cool idea really, rather than tuning itself, you tune it, but it has a knob that you simply twist does all the tunings of the robo gibson, aswell as has twelve-string and acoustic (with reverb) settings.. pretty sweet really. played nice too. i dunno, i think there'll always be a backlash against any guitar thats makes advancements at the cost of basic skills. its not like its for beginners, ya know? i doubt anyone who just decided to start playing is picking one up.

someone i talked to got one, not because he's lazy, but because he useds alot of different tunings and rather than keeping 4-5 guitars a gig, just take the one and strum it a few times. quicker than straping on another guitar and making sure THAT one is still in tune and so forth. and he got it over a vg-strat because the sound isnt at all digital as its actually tuned to whatever, rather than synthing the tuning, ya know?

locking nuts/tuners are a small example, the variax paved the way for the vg strat. we've made TONS of advancements since a '50s strat. not all of them have caught on, or were even done right. and might i say pedals are insane nowadays. its just nice to see that people are still working on new things. as long as you still know how to tune, i dont think its a big deal. and YES! you can still manualy tune it, so its not like your 100% done tuning forever or limited to popular tunings. i dont see the point in bashing it when its a good idea. theres no denying it.

and i'd imagine it'd play pretty nice, assuming you like gibsons. i personally wouldn't like the feel of it, but its still cool. its not Ace Freley's bottle-rocket guitar, but its something different.

for example, i read that the vg has software where you can change the pickup set up to sound like humbuckers in any position, or make it sound more like a jag. and thats badass. soon you we could be playing guitars that the 5-way switches dont focus on your pups at all, but different are pup combinations all together

position 1: s,s,s;

position 2: s,s,h;

position 3: h,h;

position 4: s,s, (out of phase)

and so forth.

personally, i can't wait.

worse idea ever the design team should be taken and placed against a wall to face a firing squad for designing such a terrible guitar the designs have gotten worse and worse has everyone seen the Reverse Explorer...What in gods name is happening to Gibson...

IMO, reverse explorer is not as bad as reverse flying V. 🤮

lol the Flying V was a horrible guitar to begin with, but yeah that reversed one looks a lot uglier than the Reverse Explorer.

i think the intention of the reverse v was actually to bring back oversized bows and arrows.. but it doubled as a guitar to make guitarists actually want to fire them at enemies. death by reverse flying v.. the most dispicable end ever devised by man.

If it didn't catch on, it wasn't an advancement. Most guitars sold today are strats with standard tuners and standard nuts.

But Jimi was divebombing on stage well before the floyd rose was invented, so it is an advancement of sorts, but it's still not classed as the industry standard because so many people don't like it.

The strat and Les paul standard will remain the industry standard for another 50 years easily, the robot tuners won't catch on because of the expense involved, and they have flaws like i mentioned in an earlier post.

case and point. sega cd: first games console to ever use cds. period. it wasnt even its own console, it was built like an extended sega genisis. playstation comes along like its brand new technology. sega's dreamcast comes out to compete with a new system able to handle more than the sega cd, as well as other brands following suit. sega cd NEVER caught on, and neither did dreamcast in the grand scheme of things. but the advancement was made, and its undeniable. progress defines progress, not popularity.

not that its worth arguing, but just because something hasnt risen to the top of everyones 'must buy' list doesnt take away from its function or blah blah blah.. i just saw that and to me, it likened to saying 'the best music is on the radio, because its the best." a meaningless statment full of nothing but redundence and sales statisics. i have a capo that i can roll anywhere on the neck while playing.. i don't think its a widely known item, but its useful and definately and upgrade as opposed to the standard. if i were to write a hit song, using it to roll to different keys, midsong, and in a hard to duplicate fashion, big deal if i used a capo.. its just a tool, as well as the guitar itself, persay. i know people who cant see the merit in using something as simple as a capo. seems stupid to me, like refusing to use reverb because its not naturally in the room. yes, an extreme example, but to what extent would any 'purist' go? thats what im trying to say here. in my opinion, a purist isnt nothing more than an elitist attitude, stuck in the hey day of what once was. the kkk are purists in a sence. so quit being nazi's.

a guitar that tunes itself is simply a self sufficiant instrument, like a robot that could build and fix itself. they make pianos that PLAY themselves for gods sake. only when someone has a self-playing guitar on their shoulder do i think it's fair to call it cheating, that or pretending to play, when the record is really playing through the amp, but thats a different rant, entirely.

gibson robot guitars are for millionare laryers who want a piece of furniture. i love taking care of my guitar, i mean whats the point? besides, thisll take more maintenence than a regular guitar when it malfunctions. and then what? what tech is good enough to fix this piece of machine?
