Full-sized humbucker in jazzmaster?

I have a couple of questions about putting a full-sized humbucker in a jazzmaster:

1) How do you install the pickup ring, since I assume the 4 screw holes in the ring are not mounted over the body, but are over the empty route left by the soapbar?

2) How do you get the humbucker to stay in place inside the cavity?

unless you cut the screws to the bucker back a bit it won't fit very well.

the ring will have to sit and mount to the plastic.

im not sure what you mean exactly by "how does it stay in place"

The routes of a jazzmaster are only 5/8" deep, which is okay for a humbucker, but you'll need to do some additional routing for the adjustment screws and the humbucker's adjustment screw tabs. To install a pickup ring, you'll need a custom pickguard made, as your original won't look right, because of the jazzmaster's pickups routes. The pickup ring is screwed to the pickguard only, and the humbucker is suspended by the pickup ring.

I just 'placed' a humbucker in my Jazzy, the original pup cover holds it tightly in place. No need to screw or anything, in fact no one would know you have fitted a humbucker unless they look close up and see there are no pole pieces in the cover holes, just black bobbin.

You may find you'll need a buzzstop though. Because of the extra output that area behind the bridge really comes to life, you get constant secondry harmonics using high gain. The buzzstop breaks the the string length and dampens things down a bit.

That's interesting, and I kind of wondered about doing that. I was really hoping I'd be able to install the HB without much modification, and this is looking like the way to go.

if you did this you could get a pickguard from warmoth, they have loads of options for jazzmaster pickguards

Well, its just a case of unsoldering/soldering two wires. A five minute job and its not a permanent modification. I'm not saying all humbuckers will fit, depends on the lugs, its trial and error.

You may get away without the buzzstop, it depends on what you fit, how much gain you use and your palm muting technique.

you could also get the SD jazzy bucker, its a direct replacement.or the novak jazzy buckers.
