Jaguar bridge... string wrap around... (FAO RICK ?)

Hi folks, I used to post here regularly a long time back and remember Rick used an unconventional method of wrapping the strings around the bridge before heading to the tuners...

I assume this would help the strings stay in place... and add some tension and sustain ??

Anyone care to comment...? and some links pics would be great.

Don't know if this has been talked about it much detail, or even if this was something only rick himself had come up with. I know the obvious solution would be a buzz stop but I don't wanna ruin the aesthetics 😉

Any help would be much appreciated...

^ imo, you'd ruin the aesthetics even by wrapping the strings around the bridge. 😁

About the strings staying in place.. you can file the grooves in the Jag/JM bridge or you can get some other bridge. Mustang one's the best solution, or so they say. It also depends on the gauge.. heavier are recommended for a Jag.

how so? i do it on my jag hh (gotoh tune-o-matic) by raising the posts of the tailpiece, flipping the tailpiece upside down, and then putting strings in through the front and wrapping them under. slightly increased string angle to the bridge. supposed t oincrease coupling, from what i read in this book called how to make your electric guitar play great. havent noticed much of a difference, but it cant hurt. Not a jag tailpiece though

Personally I'm referring to the bridge... it's had a decent setup on it.. no real issues just thought it may improve things further...

The whole concept came back to me the other day and wondered if it had been disscussed in detail, but I presume not.

I know Rick has tried this method and has pics to go with it... is he around at all ?

I dont get that at all. that G string looks like its about to come out of the saddle groove. ..and why the paper shim spacers?

Oh ok. I never realized the saddles rattled. but,..if thats what he had to do to fix it, more power to him.

is rick still around? id like to hear if the strings still pop out. id guess not, considering they are being pulled away from the direction of the pick attack. sounds pretty genius to me. although itll problably change the sonic characteristics, less ringing behind the bridge.

Yeah I'd be curious to hear how it changes the sound; I take it that you can't really use the tremolo with the strings wrapped like that ☹

I still think it's the dumbest idea ever. The oddities of the Jaguar are what give it it's unique sound. If you can't handle the sound, go buy another guitar. Seriously.

I'm with Aug on this one, that's wierd.

How can it add tension and sustain? You have the strings coming from the trem, over the bridge, through the nut and into the tuners, just like a regular one, surely the bridge wrap wouldn't add anything to the sound or tension.

You still have the same stringing method, but instead of having a little bit of excess string at the tuner, you have a lot around your bridge.

The paper shims on the otherhand, good mod, but i'd have used some adhesive soundproofing material like you get for home computers.

yea, thinking about it, you're right, it wont add tension, but it might add sustain due to increased coupling and less energy lost to the third bridge. and of course you can use the trem, because the change in pitch is caused by the bridge pivoting, which is not prohibited by this mod. and about the oddities of guitars giving them their unique sound, so you shouldnt mess with them... thats a crock of ####. the whole point of a guitar is to get YOUR sound out of it, who cares if its a disgrace to the Jaguar's name? Lots of you worship cobain and his bastardized jag.

I disagree with some of that.

Whilst i'm not disputing the stock Jaguar is a great guitar i think it is close minded to say you should'nt modify them. I dont understand why Offsets suffer this mentallity from its users.

It is evolution as far as i am concerned, its not 1962 anymore and players needs have changed drastically.

Look at the Strat for instance, the so called greatest guitar ever, it has more versions available than any one product in the music industry. Look at the 'SuperStrat' or Ibanez if you like, an awesome guitar but ultimately a hotrodded Stratocaster.

If someone loves Jaguars but needs different sounds or capabilities out of it, modifying it is a logical thing to do. its been going on since the 1960's with other models.

Out of my three Jags; one is stock AV, the second is improved CIJ and the third i routed for a humbucker because that is my need for my current band and i like using my Jaguars.

Something else as well, i'm putting an EMG 81 in it. Theres a few people would choke at that on certain forums, f*ck 'em! 😆

I think youse guys are misunderstanding me. I was referring to making so many changes to the Jaguar(or any guitar, for that matter), that it would make more sense to just purchase another guitar. God knows, I have no objections to modifying a guitar, but after so long, it just makes no sense.

With all that said, I may be jaded, because anytime I want something specific, I just make it. For example, I really love my Coral mustang, but I never use the tone knob or the 'out-of-phase' switches, and instead of modifying my mustang, I just built another. *shrug*

I made the neck I wanted, the body is stock and installed features that I wanted and deleted features that I didn't want. I'm hugely a single-coil type of guy, but really wanted just one guitar with a humbucker. I never use the tone control, so I got rid of that as well as the switches.

that guitar must make your ears bleed through a fender amp 😆 If i were you, and didnt use the tone controll (which i do), I would do a mod to the volume pot to give it a very slight roll of. use a .001 cap or less, and solder one end to the middle lug and one to ground (the lug soldered to the top of the pot) thats just me though.
