Mexi Duo sonic body conversion?

Sup ya'll. First post. Current MIJ Jag guy, love it.

So my plan is to get me a recent Mexi Duo Sonic body, scratch the 3 inches or so of paint off of it, route it for Stang switches and trem, and paint it orange with the red comp stripe.

Only issue I can think of is the control cavity, which looks bigger on the Mexi Duos. I'm concerned the traditional Mustang control plate wouldn't cover it entirely. Minor issue but I want to know exactly what I'm in for with this.

So any other issues anyone can percieve would be gratefully taken 😁

It's my understanding that the control plate will fit fine. dodgedartdave would know.

the stang plate doesn't fit cos the duo reissue is a different shape to a stang. the duo reissue is a reissue of the second version of the duosonic. the stang is the same shape as the duosonic II which was the third version of the duosonic.

here's what your plan would look like if you had a red duo refinished in green/blue/purple flip paint with a red tort stang guard (switches had to be removed cos i haven't routed the body).

That's right... I'm the almighty PITCH... like my hair and teeth? sometimes I'm in a more sensitive mood and I wear flannel, like a lumberjack.

Anyways... Johnnie, ouch. That puts a little damper on my plan... guard doesn't fit well at all on the lower horn. So much for that. (I used MS paint to analyze the proportions of the two guitars that way and found something similar... figured it must have been a photographic anomaly or the angles or something... I didn't think fender would #### the shape that much.

Alright... so basically as long as I get a body from a Musicmaster/Duo Sonic II I'll be fine shapewise to do a Stang conversion?

How about this one? It claims to be early 70s. But looks older to me.

i'm not totally sure but that looks like a 90s mim duo reissue body to me. the old ones didn't have that routing pattern. i'd say avoid that.

you want a duo or MM II. in the 70s there were no duos, only MMs and they were only routed for one pickup. as far as i know all duo II shape guiatrs were properly routed for two single coils and the ones with a swimming pool with a little block stuck in the middle are all mid 90s duo reissues. which are great guitars, but won't fit your project.

Good stuff, thanks 😀 Never knew the 70s mms only had one route. Exactly what is the block in the middle of the MIM for, out of curiosity?

Time to find a hopefully already butchered duo/mmII body, butchered so I won't feel guilty about routing it for a trem and a possible refin in case it ain't orange... Or I can deal with not having a trem.

its not a bad looking guitar with the pickguard left alone.

i just changed everything else.

here's mine. a 97 squier version.

i replaced the pup covers, toggle cap, and knobs to ad a little contrast.

i like it alot better than the stock color arrangement.

I aloso added some slot head vintage style tuners. (my stock ones blew)

note: my 97 squier body looks exactly like that white one under the hood. that guy either doesn't know what he is selling, or is trying to trick people into buying vintage when it could only be 10 years old

that looks alright there 😀 Love the pickup covers. All fenders should have black pickup covers. Unfortunately I'm as wanting for the switches as I am for the chrome and pickguard of the stag...

Did any MIM/Squier Duo Sonics come with a rosewood board? As for the neck I want a 70s style stock with rosewood board, again probably one where the decal is ####ed enough that I won't feel guilty about rubbing it off and refinishing it to match the body. I've pretty much resigned myself to coughing up for a vintage body.

Conveniently, it seems like almost all of them have been stripped to natural at some point in the past 🙄 giving me a clean palatte.

As for the body, this is exactly what I want.

But maybe with hotrails. Maybe have a traditional pickguard and a rails one, and switch out as necessary.

Robroe - that looks a lot like my MIM Duo.

Where did you get the covers and knobs from, I would like to do something similar to mine.

after seeing robs squier, i'd say the ebay one is a squier not a mim. the mims have a different routing pattern at the top.

the mims and squiers were all maple as far as i know.

a lot of the duoII/mm bodies on ebay seem to have been refinished several times or routed.
