The guitar held by David Byrne on the cover of The Name of This Band is Talking Heads...

Is it a mustang?

White body, red (possibly red tortoiseshell) scratchplate, angled single-coil pickup at the neck, and what looks like a hummer at the bridge (but I am very far from certain). Can't quite make out the knobs, but it looks like one tone and one volume.

The more I look and compare it to a Mustang, the more convinced I am, but I am just poting here to make sure...

i saw that pic too. it's not as clear as my cd cover, but it is larger.

looking up the Mustang on wikipedia, David Byrne was listed as a 'notable Mustang players', so I think it is a fairly safe assumption that the guitar is in fact a Mustang.

Still, could be a Jaguar...

No, it's definately not a Jaguar... Its actually most probably a Duo Sonic II:

It does look more like a Duo Sonic--while you can't see all the details, the bridge/tailpiece area looks more like that on a Duo Sonic--but it's hard to say 100%.

Also note the bass--it looks like a Mustang Bass.

Yeah, I went by the look of the tailpiece. It's smaller, so probably not the tremolo system from the Mustang. Therefore it must be the Duo Sonic II.

Yeah it does look like a short-scale.

The pic looks like it is pretty close.

edit:

just looked up the ever-reliable wikipedia, and on the Duo-Sonic page, it does say that David Byrne did in fact use the guitar early in his career. That pretty much clinches it for me.
