yeah, I respect the sentiment...ya hate to lose the vintage purity by rewinding a pickup. But I bet it will be an even better player than when it was fine.

There was one break in the wire in the neck P90 on my '63 Casino...it played okay but tested bad and eventually would have failed. I had Lindy Fralin rewind it. Sounds like a different pickup, super strong and clear. And I figure most vintage guitars eventually need some repair... So I keep Fralin's documentation with the case candy and that credibility is some compensation for the lost purity.

Go for it and enjoy your better than before sound. By the way, the neck and headstock look pristine!

I'm thinking that if I'm lucky the break is near the end and I'll just lose a few wraps in the repair. I haven't had it apart for a look since I noticed the problem, mainly because I'm busy working on a fairly intense build that's taking a lot of time and a bit of cash too. Worse case would be a complete rewind and as you say all vintage instruments get there at some point. They'll all either be repaired, broken or too fragile to play. This one is not a virgin as it's had it's switches replaced (I kept the pulls).

The headstock has a ding that happened when I was a teenager (pissed me off too, and I still remember how it happened). The neck has a little red scuff mark that will rub out with a small amount of effort. Overall it's in great shape, it's been stored more than it's been played over the last 43 years. Both the guitar and the amp survived my teenage ownership in good condition.........Bill

Bill, if it's that simple a fix, great. And it's especially cool to know you've had your Mustang so long...you "own" some history there.

Even with replaced switches (I replaced one and of course kept it) these guitars have so much sentimental value, and will have moderate cash appreciation as well. Ours are probably in the $870 to $1200 range now.

But the best news is that they continue to be players.

I don't want to unravel this thread but when you get a chance, tell us about your ambitious-sounding build...if it fits here. If not, backline me.

Fingers crossed on the simple fix! I'm usually not that lucky.

The Mustang was used but I got it in '66 so it was almost new. I got the Vibroverb at the same time so it was something like three years old when I got it.

Yeah, I checked out your build on the Fender site...creative and technically ambitious. A thought about weight-saving...are you too far along to consider a smaller body, something closer to a Tele Thinline? I bet you'd still get that exceptional sustain and feedback you're after.

Heres my mustang. Its a 1997 white mustang with some major mods. Its a les paul mustang basically. It has a Tune-O-Matic Bridge, a stop bar tailpiece were the vibrato use to be, coil taps were the phase switches were, Gibson burst bucker humbuckers, and a toggle switch in the sopt were a les paul toggle switch would be. Everything on it is professionally modified. The pickguard was customly made for the modifications. I love this guitar.

I would think that the switches on the pg would cut up your hands really bad, y'know like mustang switches do sometimes (doesn't happen to me very often, but I hear people whine about it all the time), cuz they look to be taller, sharper, and in the same position. Do you find they get in your way at all?

No, not all. They sit lower actually and there pretty small.

THIS IS WHY I LOVE MODDING GUITARS!!! Why settle for some mass produced guitar that is "kinda" like what you want when you can take the best of all you like and mash it together into one great guitar that is EXACTLY what you want?

This is the most "different" mustang i've seen so far. Reminds me of PRS guitars. Is it 24" scale?
