i have been thinking about buy fender jazzmaster of jaguar

what 1 would be good for a rock/punk/metal sound i know you dont see jazzmasters or jags in metal i think my only problem is the jag smaller neck

The smaller scale neck only becomes a problem if you have large hands. Mine are average and i can shred on a Jaguar just as well as an Ibanez.

The bigger problem is the pickups (on both). When using high gain, most notably distortion. I say that because Fuzz' works differently and is definitely more suited to single coil pickups than straight distortion.

As for users, J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr gets a heavy sound with his Jazzmaster supposedly without modifications, just Fuzz pedals. The guy in NIN uses a Jazzmaster as well and my guess is he uses Multi FX and possibly tames the feedback with a 'gate'.

Chino in The Deftones sometimes uses a Jaguar but he has upgraded the pickups, possibly to single coil size humbuckers.

Your best bet is to try the two out in a store, but i'd say the Jazzmaster is more rock friendly even though i'm a Jaguar user.

Yeah but a baritone jag might be too big a scale length.

I have above average sized hands, like slightly longer fingers than most, and i wouldn't be able to fret a chord correctly low down on anything over a strat's 25.5" scale.

You need to go and try a few out, play a jag or mustang, a jazzmaster or strat, and if you're comfortable on the strat, THEN consider the jump to the baritone.

28.5" doesn't sound like a big difference compared to 25.5", but it's halfway between a guitar and a bass. It'd be good if you mostly use a dropped tuning, but if you want to play a barre chord at the first three frets, you may struggle.
