who is buying these?

i love MBV as much as some of you love Nirvana...but if they came out with a Kevin Shields signature Jazzmaster...I would avoid it like the black death...I would think that some credibility as a musician is lost by playing a signature model.

don't take this as insult...i am really curious who is buying this type of thing? same goes for the gilmour strat that so graciously slams itself down your throat on the home page to this site, or the clapton sig models, or the hendrix sig model, etc......are they for collectors or cover bands?

Looking at that gilmour strat I don't see the point, same goes for a lot of these models. To me it just looks like a strat 😕

with the KC Jag I am going to be replicating it (to a point, will see how far in the future), but only because I want the same things, i.e. a couple of humbuckers...

I also think that this includes a jag-stang which is i guess a signature edition? strange one that as it is a unique guitar rather than a strat with a different knob on it.

i think there is nothing wrong with experimenting and using templates to help hone in on a sound...in fact, i likely would not have even paid attention to the clone theory if it wasn't for joy division (not that i want to be interpol or anything)....

but damn...i know you can build a higher quality better sounding "bastard" jag that hits all the bases of those KC models for a whole lot less....sounds like that is what you are doing melvinman..

indeed it is, albeit minus the neck, but i do have a separate plan for that...

almost worth modding CIJ jags and selling them on as KCs...

by credibility as a musician do you mean playing a signature model of somebody else's or having a signature model made for you? i dont think theres anything wrong with a signature model as long as it adds something to the guitar. but the way theyre made, its pointless. for instance, the SRV strat. WTF? same guitar, with his signature and gold hardware. pointless. or the gilmour. two seperate finishes and a shortened arm?

i mean if you buy and play a signature model...to me it is stripping away one of the goals we as musicians should always be striving for....creativity.

borrowing ideas and checking out rigs are fine ways to develop and experiment as long as it adds to creative process...but if one thing in your arsenal should be yours it should be the guitar...even if it is a stock el cheapo model....plus...on the subject of the cobain model...you could just get mid range epiphone sg with the same features for hundreds less!

I think every guitar has some connection to a player one way or another and just because its a signature model doesn't take away from your creativity, many times people buy them because it has the tone that they are looking for in there music and helps the process of creating there own music easier. Other times a signature model will have features on it that the person wants and likes the look of the guitar (say a jaguar with the kurt modes) but doesn't want to buy a Jaguar and just have it modded since its already done. Granted some people buy them because there collectors or huge fans and some because there in covers bands etc, I have an SRV Strat but I have removed the SRV pickguard and am in the process of getting a right handed bridge, what I like about the guitar is its tone from the Texas Special pickups and and Pao Ferro fretboard. I don't SRV songs and I don't really care for him as a player that strat just sounds better to me then the others in the storm. What judges artistic creativity I think lies with the person if they are getting it because " THATS LYKE THE SAME GUITAR AND IT WILL MAKE ME LIKE THEM" then they aren't a very creative person to begin with but I think if someone just likes the guitar because the tone it has is something there looking for there is nothing wrong with that.

I'll agree with that, but its rediculous when signature models come out and there's no difference from a regular say, Stratocaster as there's a lot of sig Strats, aside from chrome hardware.

Thats really true, I will only justify a signature guitar if it at least has different pickups or some feature that isn't available on any other model, otherwise its just silly like the Hendrix strat! Its the same with a flipped neck come on thats stupid fender! So I agree with you on that
